Description:

2007 Muxagat Vinho Tinto Douro:
"Chocolate and spice dominate this wine. It is very dry, very firm, extracted but intense, the fruit only slowly coming through the other flavors. A potentially impressive wine, from vineyards high up the Douro, this is worth aging 2-3 years." 92 Points - Wine Enthusiast

WINERY:
"Muxagat is a project between two grape growers from the Douro Valley, Mateus Nicolau de Almeida and Eduardo Lopes, with the goal of producing high quality wines. Muxagat Vinhos started as a small garage winery in 2002, in the tiny village of Muxagata, outside the town of Vila Nova de Foz Coa. The following year the company moved to Meda, to an old traditional winery with granite lagars."

"The new winery is located at a higher altitude, allowing for cooler temperatures, ideal for aging wine. The first Muxagat harvest in 2002 produced 5,000 bottles of red wine. In 2003, they produced 6,000 bottles of white wine. The goal is to gradually increase quantities to 50,000 bottles a year while still producing great quality wines."

"The winemaking responsibilities belong to Mateus Nicolau de Almeida. The vineyards are situated in the Douro Superior section of the Douro Valley, in the northwest of Portugal near the Spanish border, which is famous for its Port wine. The soil is made of schist and the climate conditions allow for very low yields, around 2.2 tons per acre.

"The vineyard is planted in terraces with the vines and average age of 40 years old for the white, and ten for the red. The grape varieties are indigenous to Portugal; the white grapes are mainly Rabigato, while Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão and Tinto Roriz make up the reds." -Importer

This wine also scored 88 Points by both the Wine Spectator and the Wine Advocate.

2004 Quinta Da Garrida Reserva Dao:
"A powerful expression of Touriga Nacional, from a single vineyard in the Dao revealing ripe structured fruits along with dark, linear tannins. The wine has spice, but the fruits are darkly dry, with a tense, firm aftertaste. Age for 2-3 years." 92 Points Wine Enthusiast

"The sour cherry scent deepens to riper blackberry flavors, creating the tension that keeps this wine firm. Up front, it's brisk with scents of herbs and violets; in the finish, it's potent and generous, with earthy, mineral tannins. A substantial Dão, this needs cellar time to fully evolve." -90 Points Wine & Spirits

WINERY:
"Located in the Dão wine region, in Vila Nova de Tazém, Gouveia, near Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain of Portugal, Garrida has been highly involved in the production of quality wines. The estate covers a total area of 300 acres, of which 255 acres are planted with traditional red varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Rufete, Tinta Roriz, and Alfroncheiro and traditional whites such as Encruzado, Bical and Arinto."

"The soils are predominantly slate and granite with a high proportion of sand and some clay, which allow the production of wine with very distinct characteristics: elegant with good acidity. Bounded by high mountains and protected by the Atlantic, this rich wine region benefits from the warm summers, cool nights, and abundant winter rainfall." -Importer

VITICULTURE & VINITFICATION:
"With a total area of 112 ha, 80 of them are vineyards with 15 years, and the rest of the plantations - the new ones - were made using the most modern techniques. With granitic, light and poor soils, typical from the region, this land allows a wine with very specific characteristics. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen and Alfrocheiro Preto are the main red varieties produced and vinified here. Separately, our wine cellar in Gouveia is gifted with the most adequate equipments for wine production of high quality, with separate vinification of the existing varieties." -Winery

Mark Squires of the Wine Advocate rated this wine 89 Points. The Wine Spectator rated it 86 Points.
