"Pungent aromas of slate, violet and black currant are immediate and intense. The flavors show pure lime, peach and mineral salt, matched to a creamy texture and a vibrant structure. Fine length. Best from 2012 through 2027. 2,000 cases made." 93 Points - Wine Spectator |
Description:
"The Prum 2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese ââ¬â as with the corresponding Kabinett ââ¬â is aromatically more marked by the residues of fermentation than are its immediate siblings. Hints of mango, quince, and musk added to the more predictable apple, vanilla, and liquid floral perfume and lend this an exotic touch, while its mineral side is dominated by striking salinity that enhances the savory stimulation of a long finish as well as offering a fascinating foil to the wineââ¬â¢s creaminess of texture and sheer ripeness.
"And while the nose needs to clear up here, the palate displays a remarkable sense of clarity to a wealth of flowers and spices. The wine seems to coat the palate while hovering above it, to seduce without touching. This should put on quite a show over the next 30 or more years."
"The Prums compare 2008 with 2004 and as such consider it a classic Spatlese year, with thankfully with more wine in the Kabinett range that this estate has seen in many years. And if you remain unconvinced after tasting the present collection that residually sweet Kabinett Riesling is capable not only of reflecting the full potential of great Mosel vineyard sites but also capable of profundity and greatness per se, then you never will be." 93+ Points - David Schildknecht - Wine Advocate
"Fruit-driven aromas of white peach and apricot, lifted by a floral element and a hint of spicy botrytis. The rich, creamy, sweet tropical fruits and bracing minerality provide an excellent framework on the palate. An auslese in its depth, concentration and complexity, this spatlese remains bright and vibrant on its long, spicy finish. One of the stars of the vintage." 93 Points - Joel Payne - International Wine Cellar
"This houses its ripe fruit in a delicate frame, feeling energetic and impeccably harmonious. The aromas of white peach and citrus are saturated with slatiness, turning floral on the long finish." 92 Points - Wine & Spirits
"Delicate lemony color. Fragrant nose of peach and apricot crème pastry, with hints of sherbet and grapefruit and a stony mineral focus. Crisp, racy with a youthful fruit cocktail medley of flavors. Light-bodied but focused and taut. Not hugely concentrated, but well balanced and persistent." 90 Points - Wine Enthusiast
VINEYARD:
"Wehlener Sonnenuhr (VAY-len-er ZON-en-ooer) is a precipitously steep and rocky vineyard which yields some of the most elegant and sophisticated white wines in the world. It has very thin soil and the purest blue slate of any Mosel vineyard. This gives a lively minerality to the wine, along with a delicate and crisp acidity that perfectly balances the bright white peach and lemon fruit. Itââ¬â¢s an aristocratic and charming wine that dances gracefully on the palate." -Winery
ESTATE:
"The J.J. Prüm wines have a reputation for being very long-lived and Dr. Prüm suggests that even his Kabinett wines ideally be cellared for five years or more, Spätlesen and Auslesen of course longer. 20-years-old J.J.Prüm Kabinetts and Spätlesen are still vivid, and Auslesen remain fascinating for decades, not even to speak about Beerenauslesen (BA), Trockenbeerenauslesen (TBA) and Eisweine. However, Dr. Prüm acknowledges that also a very young Kabinett, Spätlese or Auslese can be extremely attractive ââ¬â no complaint at all if such wines are savored with indulgence in their very youth already!"
"Unlike his father, who preferred to drink Auslesen and Beerenauslesen mostly, Manfred is fascinated by the whole spectrum of Prädikate and enjoys it best to celebrate the progression, possibly with a few wine enthusiasts, starting with delicate, racy Kabinetts, continuing with slightly richer Spätlesen and then even fuller-bodied, yet elegant Auslesen, and ââ¬â in the best case - finally climaxing in an aged BA, TBA or Eiswein."
"The 55 acre estate consists of about 90% ungrafted, old vines. Holdings are in the best parts of the top Middle-Mosel sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Bernkasteler Lay and Bernkasteler Badstube. Plantings of the estate are 100 % Riesling and on steeply sloping Devon schist soil." -Importer
