2006 ASTRALES CHRISTINA RIBERA DEL DUERO
"The 2006 Astrales Christina is a single vineyard selection, sees malolactic fermentation in barrel, and is aged in 100% new oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it gives up a superb aromatic array of toasty new oak, pencil lead, lavender, leather, incense, blueberry, and black cherry. Opulent, dense, and layered on the palate, this youthful effort is impeccably balanced and built for the long haul. Give it at least 8-10 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2016 to 2036. Patience will be well rewarded." -95 points- Jay Miller- Wine Advocate
"Sleek and polished, this red has plenty of structure and depth. Blackberry, espresso, floral and mineral flavors build through the fresh, long finish. Alluring, expressive and modern, yet stays true to its roots. Drink now through 2016." -93 points Wine Spectator
"Inky ruby. Smoky aromas of raspberry, cherry-cola, licorice and dried flowers. Smooth, sappy red fruit preserve flavors are enlivened by tangy mineral and spice notes, gaining structure with air. Showing more oak than the regular Astrales, with the finish displaying a strong spiciness and very good cut." -91 points- Josh Raynolds- International Wine Cellar
"This special wine is only made in exceptional years. There are three major factors differentiating this wine versus the 'regular' bottling of Astrales. First, the wine will be a selection of the strongest single vineyard each year, depending on vintage characteristics and winemaker Eduardo Garcia's impressions; the 2005 and 2006 are both from the Fuentesanta vineyard. Second, all of the wine sees malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. Third, the wine is aged in only new French oak."
"This wine is made from a seleccion of fruit from Pago de Fuentesanta. Pago de Fuentesanta is an 80 year old, hillside vineyard planted in vaso, with a southeastern exposure. All grapes were manually harvested into small boxes. Yields were miniscule; less than 1 ton/acre. The wine was fermented in 2,000 Kg tanks with native yeasts and saw 15 days contact with skins. The wine was then aged for 24 months in 100% New French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered." -Importer
2006 PHARAOHMOANS PASO ROBLES SYRAH
"Inky ruby. Explosively perfumed nose offers a sexy bouquet of smoky dark berries, cherry preserves, fruitcake, olive and incense. Fleshy and youthfully bitter, offering deep cassis and dark cherry flavors that are framed by lightly chewy tannins and gain sweetness with air. The spicy notes echo on the sappy, very long finish. This is already delicious but has the concentration to reward patience." -92 points- Josh Raynolds- International Wine Cellar
"Lastly, a new 300-case offering marketed under a different label, the 2006 Pharaohmoans is a blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Grenache. It offers plenty of espresso roast, blackberry liqueur, licorice, smoke, and a hint of barbecue spices in a full-bodied, powerful style. More tannic, structured, and backward than some of its siblings, it is meant for long-term cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018+."
"Transplanted Frenchman, Stephan Asseo (from St.-Emilion), has found a home as well as some great terroirs in the limestone soils of Paso Robles (all his vineyards are situated on the western side of Highway 101). Asseo continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent." -90+ Points - Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate
"This very dry wine is dominated by its hard tannins, and comes across as a bit rigid and austere, especially by California standards. Yet itâs very finely structured, with a keen edge of black pepper to the currant and blackberry flavors buried way beneath. Give it through 2009, but if you must drink now, decant." -90 Points Wine Enthusiast
