"Ruby-red. Smoky cherry, candied plum, baking spices, incense and deeper blackberry and boysenberry on the nose and palate, with gentle tannins adding grip. Finishes with very good spicy lift and cut. A very impressive showing for this Italianate blend-a category that is often a let-down." -90 points- Josh Raynolds- International Wine Cellar
"This unusual blend of Shiraz and Sangiovese strikes an appealing, earthy chord. Its got plenty of plum, watermelon and strawberry fruit on top of a woodsy underpinning. Long, irresistible finish of vanilla and chocolate. Brawny tannins argue for a steak accompaniment. Best 20112013." - 90 Points - Wine Enthusiast
WINE:
"Il Briccone means 'The Rogue' and with this blend of Aussie Shiraz and Italy's Sangiovese grape varietal, winemaker Joe Grilli aims to combine everything he loves about Australian wine in an Italian style blend."
"Our aim is to make an Australian wine with a little piece of what we love about Italy inside. Only Sangiovese, the variety of Italy's famous Chianti, can combine concentrated cherry character with a lively finish. Shiraz contributes plum, pepper and spice with its typical generosity. We only use older oak barrels (for 14 months) to marry the varietal components of the wine. The result is a wine that will go wonderfully with Mediterranean foods, or indeed the whole world of olive oil based cuisine. It is at home next to an antipasto platter and an unbeatable match for a good pizza." -Winery
WINERY:
"The story begins in 1953 when Primo Grilli arrived in Australia from the Le Marche wine region of Italy with a vision of growing Italian grape varieties in this sun soaked new land. Recognising the grape growing potential of South Australia, with warm summers and cooling maritime influences similar to his homeland of Le Marche, Primo planted the family's first vineyard in 1973, just north of Adelaide around a small township called Virginia. Primo's eldest son, Joseph, studied Oenology at South Australia's legendary Roseworthy College. Joe graduated Dux of his class in 1978 and a new winery was built in Virginia. From his very first vintage as winemaker in 1979, aged just 20, Joseph Grilli sought to create revolutionary wines." -Winery
