Rating: 90 Points - Wine SpectatorSize:750ML
Region: Loire Valley Country:France
Varietal: Chardonnay And Grolleau Gris ABV:12.5%

"Lovely powdered ginger and cardamom notes lead the way, followed by salted butter, blanched almond and nectarine flavors. The long, stylish finish has nice, latent minerality. Very fine. Drink now through 2011." -90 points Wine Spectator

WINERY:
"For Thierry Michon, the gregarious force behind one of the Loire's best-kept secrets, Domaine Saint Nicolas, it's all about the soil. Working on schist and silex a stone's throw away from the Atlantic, Thierry is the prophet of biodynamics in this tiny viticultural area. His vineyards never see a non-organic product. He has slowly purchased buffer zones all around his property to prevent chemical products from other winemakers from seeping into his parcels. For him, biodynamics isn't a pragmatic consideration, it's a religion."

"Domaine Saint Nicolas sits at the extreme southern end of the Loire delta, just south of Muscadet, but there is no Melon de Bourgogne planted here. Instead, Thierry works old vines of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Groslot, Pinot Noir, Negrette, and Cabernet Franc. One of the few in the area to age in barrel, Thierry's years of hard work are starting to pay off. For years he worked all week in the vines and then took off on Friday afternoons for the 5 hour drive to Paris. From the back of his truck he sold his wines to restaurants and small shops. When the wines starting showing up on the lists of Guy Savoy, Taillevent, and Arpège, people starting paying attention. Now he is a leader of the biodynamics movement in France, the defender of his little appellation, and one of France's most respected winemakers. These are soulful wines of amazing purity." -Importer

REGION:
"Situated in the extreme southern Loire delta about an hour south of Muscadet, the Fiefs Vendéens sits just a couple of kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. This oceanic influence exerts itself in many ways. Winds coming off the ocean keep the vines pushed down, such that harvesting at St. Nicolas is carried out by crawling through the vines, not walking. The wines often pick up a delicious salinity from these parcels with views on the ocean. This is terroir at its best."

"The Fiefs Vendéens is made up of four zones, based around 4 villages, all of which have the right to put the name of the village on the label. Saint Nicolas is based in Brem, a zone made up primarily of schist and silex, ideal for the creation of mineral-rich Chenin and pristine Pinot Noir. The zone is still classified as a VDQS and has applied for full AOC status. The other three, Vix, Mareuil, and Pissotte are combinations of clay and silex. Schist is dominant at Saint Nicolas and covers the surface of the vineyards. Although the vines are quite close to the Atlantic, there is very little sand in the soil." -Importer

hey guys we have another wine available until 9PM tonight, when we’ll post the regularly scheduled item ;) -KM

  2. Phredd

Well, I guess some folks like it. I have one in my cellar, but haven’t tried it, yet. I did renew the request for a varietal correction in CT, though, since this is not a chenin blanc. I look forward to trying it.

    great wine and value!
    already a pumpkin; darn!
does this send the message about eclectic interesting whites from small dedicated producers? yes it does!
    thanks cindy.

  4. CB

upfog… hold last comment re acquiring six whites… May not have beaten the big orange squash. We shall see.

  5. SNF

    @LoudRedBoa- nice one

ufpog… speaking of whites, I got 6 of these. If you want a couple (any excuse for another trip to Jade?) let me know. Now back to bezzball, which has been verrrrry good to me.

  8. BaroloDude

    sold out already.

  9. patrick hill

@castelloooooalso, you still lost in space ?

  10. CB

Yankees… Whitey Ford was the best. (Does qualify as talking about whites?)

  11. ufpog

@famdoc: It hurts when I move my arm like this…

@kittysafe – Are you really as stupid as you make out to be? It’s end of August, 2010. Do you really expect any wine shop, especially the WL, to still have a 2004 Sancerre from a nondescript producer? Also considering the fact that the WL has sold out of the 2006 vintage. Find a new wine to harp on already!

  13. BURGHen Boy

@ufpog – check out B-21 for the Domaine Gallois Gevery Chambertin if you were thinking of tring out a red burgh in the $40 range

Sorry to interrupt baseball talk (this young Yankees pitcher impressed me greatly yesterday..with AJ pitching so
poorly and Petite out for another two weeks, I was starting to feel a bit cynical about the Yankees’ chances down
the home stretch), but I’m in for 2 of these geeky Loire whites. I’m just glad to see Cindy offer some whites:
my fridge for whites is showing some major empty spaces). So, in that spirit, would like to see what kind of
whites CW regulars most frequently drink. In our house, we do 80% reds/20% whites, meaning we need one
white a week. This summer, Sauv Blancs have been the easiest to swallow. My wife doesn’t particularly care
for Cali-style Chards, so I try to have a few white Burgundies in the fridge. I’m a big fan of CdP whites, along
with other whites from the Rhone. The best white I’ve ever tasted, however, was a 1992 Smith Haut Lafite
white. Second best was one of Didier Dagueneau’s Pur Sangs.

    CWs…let’s talk whites.

  15. Carlitos

Crap! I already bought six when this was offered on the Free WL. :S

I still have it held for shipment, but I’m sure I’ll still love it as much as if I had paid the reduced Cindy price! This is great natural wine, refreshing un-oaked Chardonnay, from a unique region.

Bring on the French, KM… :)

@BB- oh sorry…should I say it in French instead? ;) -KM

Murph: We’re talking about baseball and boxers, Do You Mind?? ;)

  22. ufpog

CB: When the controversial new stadium is finished, it will be packed for exactly 2 weeks….then back to business as usual….

  23. Cinderella Wine

has anyone tried this wine? this is such a geeky Loire Valley white…and it comes from a cool importer, Jon David Headrick. He also has the Noblaie Chinon if anyone’s tried that out. -KM

  24. CB

Upfog… Yes. If an empty stadium cheers, does anybody spill their beer?

  25. ufpog

@CB I imagine that might be the clearing created by a vacant ballpark?

  26. ufpog

@B squared: Nice finish…and I am not against bringing back BR, but we all have to cover for him while he is enjoying what appears to be a rather extended honeymoon

  27. CB

@upfog…. no doubt you are referring to the stands at Marlin bezzzball games when Nunez, the overblown reliever steps to the mound (to blow yet another) save… non? :)

  28. BrunelloBob

In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade,
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down,
Or cut him ’til he cried out in his anger and his shame,
“I am leaving, I am leaving.”
    But the fighter still remains.

  29. Kittysafe

I definitely don’t need 6 bottles of this. Now how about 6 bottles of Leon Vattan 2004 Sancerre? ;)
Have we had any decent Sancerre this summer? The perfect summer wine? Or an Azol Moscato?

  30. BrunelloBob

    No offense, of course, upfrog!

  31. BrunelloBob

    Bring Back Bottomrock!
