Description:

2006 BUCKSHOT HEATHCOTE SHIRAZ:
"Dark and juicy, this is polished in texture but wild and woolly in flavor, with coffee-accented huckleberry and plum flavors that rocket through the finely tuned, vibrant finish. Best from 2011 through 2016. 200 cases made." -91 points Wine Spectator

"The purple-colored 2006 Shiraz was aged in a mix of new and used French and American oak hogsheads for 16 months. It reveals an expressive perfume of cedar, earth, mineral, blueberry, and licorice. Firm upon entry with excellent depth and concentration, notes of pepper, plum and blueberry emerge on the palate. Nicely balanced, this ripe, flavorful effort should be at its best from 2010 to 2018." -90 points- Jay Miller- Wine Advocate

VINIFICATION:
"The making of our Shiraz utilises a mix of tradition and innovation. Grapes were picked then crushed and de-stemmed into open pots. The must is then 'cold soaked' for 3 days before cultured yeasts are added for fermentation. During fermentation, the 'cap' is hand plunged to ensure colour, flavour and tannin extraction are gently achieved. Part of the juice finishes fermentation in barrel, while the remaining juice finishes fermentation on skins before being transferred to barrel. The wines going through malo-lactic fermentation in barrel. Buckshot employs Oak sourced from several different French and American coopers to add complexity. The wine then ages in hogsheads for up to 16 months prior to bottling, which is done with minimal filtration, before being sealed with a screw-cap." -Winery

VINEYARDS:
"Buckshot vineyard is situated on an east-facing slope just to the south-west of Colbinabbin on the sought after Mt Camel range. The 500 million year old Cambrian bedrock has broken down over the past 400 million years into jasper, greenstone, granite and with weathering Buckshot ironstone pebbles that give the wines their name. The soil has a vivid red colour and is punctuated with the rocks above."

"The 5-acre Shiraz patch is planted at the top of the east-facing slope, where the 100 million year old Cambrian earth is at its deepest- up to 6 metres! Heathcote provides the ideal climate to grow Shiraz- warm days and cool nights provide ripe fruit with good acid and tannin structure." -Winery

2006 SLIPSTREAM SHIRAZ FASTBACK:
"Ripe, focused cherry and blackberry flavors buzz with extra orange peel, mint and spice overtones as they zing through the long, vivid finish. The tannins are beautifully integrated. Best from 2010 through 2016. 800 cases made." -91 points Wine Spectator

"Inky, youthful purple. Impressively complex bouquet of boysenberry, anise, baking spices, rose and lavender. Supple dark berry flavors offer serious palate-coating texture and are enlivened by zesty minerality. Combines richness and energy with a deft hand, finishing with very good clinging persistence. These wines are made by Ben Glaetzer, with the exception of the grenache component of the previous wine, which was made by Stephen Pannell." -91 Points - Josh Raynolds - International Wine Cellar

WINE:
"This year's vintage was made by Ben Glaetzer. The grapes were gently pressed under temprature-controlled conditions. After fermentation, the wine was racked into 2-3 year old French barrique and matured for 16 months. This shiraz comes from the 2 earliest ripening, oldest sections of Benjamin Hammerschlag's high-altitude, McLaren Vale property. This is aged for 15 months in French oak, 40% new." -Importer

VINTAGE:
"In terms of overall quality the 2006 vintage was very good. A dry winter followed by heavy rains in spring resulted in vines with healthy, balanced canopies on most soils. A mild early summer leading into a warmer period during veraison stopped vegetative growth allowing vines to channel energy into the fruit." -Importer

This also scored 89-91 points by Jay Miller of the Wine Advocate.
