93 Pts Wine Spectator

"Very juicy, with well-focused layers of cassis and plum fruit riding on top of chocolate, graphite and toast notes. The long, dark finish shows flashes of fruit, mocha and mineral, and the tannins are ripe and well-embedded for cellaring. Drink now through 2015. 1,300 cases made." -93 points Wine Spectator

WINE:
"This cuvee sources fruit from 7 different parcels located along the Coteaux de Seyssuel. The first vines were planted in 1996 that includes a total of 10 hectares. The name Sotanum refers to a beverage with beneficial effects that used to be made in this region in the past." -Winery; translated by KM

VINIFICATION:
"This is partially destemmed and maceration occurs over a period of 3 to 4 weeks. There are 2 punching downs a day, plus one pumping over once alcoholic fermentation begins. The wine is aged for 18 months in 50% new oak barrels. One racking is done after malolactic fermentation. No fining or filtration." -Winery; translated by KM

VINEYARDS:
"The history of the Seyssuel vineyards is closely tied to the wines of Vienne who has been respected since the Roman Empire. In his writings, Pliny the Elder wrote about these wines, saying 'with regards to the red grapes, called Vitis allobrogica, cultivated in the Vienne region, there are 3 Crus in the following order: Sotanum, Tabernum, and Heluicum.' This region stayed popular until the end of the 19th century, when Seyssuel vineyards were destroyed by phylloxera. Despite several restoration attempts, this region was left practically abandoned until 1996."

"These vineyards are located in the northernmost region of the Rhone Valley. Situated on the left bank of the Rhone, the hills are more gentle than in Cote Rotie, even though they are comparable to the Cote Blonde. The soils are predominantly schist. The climate is continental, moderated by hot and dry summers which permit the grapes to fully ripen. At only 700 meters at its widest, Seyssuel is the narrowest appellation in the Rhone Valley." -Winery; translated by KM
