Description:

2002 ELDERTON ODE TO LORRAINE:
"An impressive blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Shiraz, and 7% Merlot, the 2002 Ode to Lorraine possesses an extroverted bouquet of red and black fruits, pepper, licorice, cedar, and sweet, toasty new oak. Full-bodied, heady, and rich, it appears to have been made for the quintessential hedonist. It should continue to drink well for 6-7 years." -92 points Robert Parker

WINE:
"Very rich dark purple. Fantastic aromas of chocolate, berry and licorice are well wrapped in lovely toasty oak. Full bodied with velvety ripe refined tannins and a long rich finish . Already showing amazing harmony between power and elegance. Enjoy now or age 10 -15 years + from vintage."

"A Cabernet/Shiraz/Merlot blend was added to our portfolio from the 1992 vintage. It was a belief that through blending only the best parcels of fruit from the Elderton vineyard, a truly wondrous and complete wine could be made that showed the highlights of the three grape varieties. The decision was made from the 2002 vintage onwards for it to be renamed (from CSM) in honour of the co founder of Elderton, Lorraine Ashmead. The winemaking team at Elderton believe this is truly the hidden gem in the Elderton portfolio of premium reds." -Winery

WINEMAKING:

"Cabernet Sauvignon (several blocks planted between 1964 & 1994) Shiraz (several blocks planted between 1914 & 1998) Merlot (blocks planted 1982 & 1985). After crushing, fermentation takes place in old concrete open top fermenters at around 30 degrees C for approximately 7 days before maturation in a combination of new and old French and American Oak puncheons for 18 months to 2 years. Each parcel is kept separate until assemblage time, where the Elderton team play with different percentages to ensure the best wine is produced. This wine has been styled to give a velvety silkiness and elegance across the whole flavour profile." -Winery

This scored 89 points by Josh Raynolds of the International Wine Cellar.

2002 RBJ THEOLOGICUM MATARO:
"The 2002 Mataro is 100% Mourvedre from 45- to 55-year-old vines. Exhibiting notes of tree bark, fresh mushrooms, and dusty blueberry and currant fruit as well as high tannin and equally high levels of fruit and concentration, loads of spice, pepper, and minerals, this impressive wine can be drunk now or cellared for 7-8 years." -91 points Robert Parker

WINERY:
"RBJ is the result of a weekend project inaugurated some 10 years ago by a desperate trio of wine enthusiasts who decided that as they could no longer afford to drink the top Rhones that they so much enjoyed, they'd better go out and make a few of their own."

"R is for Chris Ringland, erstwhile winemaker at Rockford (and creator of Three Rivers, described by Robert Parker as 'maybe the greatest Shiraz produced in Australia)."

"B was originally Rolf Binder, of Veritas wines. However, since 1997, commitments at his dashing new winery near Marananga mean that he no longer is able to participate in RBJ."

"J is for Russell Johnstone, leading viticulturist with Orlando (a small winery based at Rowland Flat), who has been one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of mature vineyards in the Barossa." -Winery
