Description:

2007 TE AWA SYRAH:
"A dynamic red, focused and elegant, spreading a blanket of black pepper over a core of blackberry, currant and licorice flavors that keep kicking through the long, vivid finish. Best from 2011 through 2017. 600 cases made." -93 points Wine Spectator

Blog post by Harvey Steiman from the Wine Spectator: "Syrah from New Zealand? Distinctive style from Hawkes Bay may be the next big thing."

"'I was tasting with Ant McKenzie, newly responsible for the winemaking at Te Awa Farm in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. We had just tried a 2007 Merlot and a 2007 Cabernet blend, and finished with 2007 Syrah. The result was a revelation.'"

"My job is to inform American wine drinkers of what's available and provide some guidance. So here's my guidance: Be wary of Hawkes Bay Cabernet and Merlot. Jump at the chance to drink the Syrahs."

"I'm telling you, Syrah on the North Island of New Zealand. It's the coming thing." -Harvey Steiman- Wine Spectator

2006 CHATEAU MONTVIEL LA RESERVE:
"This cuvee is a stouter version of the classic wine of Montviel. Bolder tannins, more lively acids and good fruit lead way to the classic green olive and herb notes of Merlot grown in Pomerol. This should last for 15+ years, and is an absolute steal at this price! 90% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc."

"The 93-95 point score I have put in here is where I would expect this wine to score on most palates, of course I can't really score a wine I helped blend and put together but I can say that I am beyond excited with this blend and feel like this may become the sleeper of the La Reserve program! The loaded fruit and complexity of this wine is more reminiscent of the wines of Le Gay or Trotanoy then prior Montviel's. The fans of the monster Pomerol wines will be happy but this does have a hint of refinement that some of the bombs lack." -93-95 points Gary Vaynerchuk

"Chateau Montviel was purchased in 1985 by Catherine Péré-Vergé (Chateau Lafleur, Chateau Le Gay). It is located at the North-West corner of Pomerol and spans 5 hectares whose average vine age is 30 years. The soil is a fine sand-gravel mix, much like Clinet, with deposits of iron. It is this soil combination, typical of Pomerol, that gives the wines their unique blend of elegance and power. Michel Rolland is the consulting oenologist. Montviel produces a second wine, La Rose Montviel." -Importer

"I blended this wine and took out some of the oak monster without losing the Michel Rolland magic from this awesome estate." -Gary Vaynerchuk

"Catherine Peré-Vergé, heir to the Arques glasswork billions, likes to mountain bike through the Pomerol vineyards when she visits Château Montviel, which she bought 12 years ago. Her success at Montviel is in bringing an outsider's appreciation of the wealth of Pomerol, balancing richness and harmony in the wine of her property."
