"A blend of syrah and carinena, this has the muscle tone of a marathon runner, its flavors of ripe berry and cherry filling the palate with grace. Air reveals an earthy, spicy finish. Try it with duck in a sweet sauce." -90 points Wine & Spirits

"Venus La Universal is the creation of young and super-talented enologist Sara Pérez, the driving force behind Mas Martinet in Priorat, and Dominio de Bibei in Galicia. Sara’s father Luis was, along with René Barbier, the driving force behind the emergence of Priorato twenty years ago. Venus' debut vintage was a stunning 1999, quickly guaranteeing the new Denominacion de Origen 'Montsant' a serious place in the Spanish wine scene in 2001."

"Tiny quantities of two different wines come from a number of schist & granite composed parcels around the village of Falset at altitudes between 300-700 meters above sea level, often steeply terraced, all enjoying a warm, Mediterranean climate with dramatic day/night temperature shifts. Today Sara has joined forces with her husband René Barbier Jr. to form an unbeatable duo with talent and experience, to bring their parents' work full circle."

"The vines are 10-70 years old and the vineyards are schist, clay & calcareous, with south-south east exposure. The wine is harvested around mid September. All of the vineyard sites are farmed organically and located within a 5km radio of the southern Montsant D.O, but with subtle differences in climatic influences and soils."

"Following carefully hand selection, fermentation occurs in open 500 L barrels at 29-32ºC, wood vats and concrete tanks. The maceration lasts for about 32 days. After press, the wine enters into French barrels of 300 L, 20% new. Every year the elevage time varies, but it normally between 18 and 24 months." -Winery

WINEMAKER
"Pérez makes wine at Clos Martinet, which her father founded in 1992, at Cims de Porrera, in conjunction with a local cooperative, and with Los Ocho, a group of eight young friends. She also produces Venus and Eneas, muscular red blends from the Montsant region where Laurona is based. She's keenly attuned to the history embedded in the abandoned vineyard terraces that mark Priorat's steep hills, and in the character of the old men whose ancient vineyards supply the grapes for Cims de Porrera." -2003 Wine Spectator article: Click here to see the full article (You may need to be a subscriber).

@ Vino. Those were the free shipper recently right? I bought like 6. They are awesome! Speaking of Riesling debating either the Reily’s or OUT as part of the free shippers. Any suggestions as to which of these two is best?

  2. Vino

Just finished the last bottle of the Kartauserhof reisling. Why didn’t I buy more??!?!?!?!?!

  3. kurt

Surprised this did not sell out. With the GV hype. Not to mention $20+ off the WL regular sale price.
Excited to see what’s on tap tonight.

  4. R-Dawg

The Tor is a good wine, but it’s also almost $60. For that much, I think I would rather take a chance on a CW wine that is hyped up by GV.

    I’ll be patient…

  5. DrB

@awm, cellofello thatnks for the comments. still unsure about Tor with tomorrow’s offering. we’ll see how long i last after the Alfred Gratien Brut I’m working on now…

  6. Ivan

Drinking the Crognolo Toscana 2006 with some homemade chicken soup. This is some good vino. Nice balance and medium body. Dark fruit meets acid in a good way. Finish is a little shorter than I would like and coould me a little more complex, but what do you want for $10 (half bottle). 87-88 pts

@Thin Man we’re actually going to Pine Ridge Saturday for a wine dinner. Really looking forward to it.

  9. Kingphat

GV rated the 2005 Tor Kenward
Family Wines Cimarossa Vineyard on a WLTV episode and gave it a 92points… Not the same wine but sourced from same vineyard. I am a sucker and went in on two.

  10. cellofello

@DrB – I have not tasted the 2005 Tor Mast-Cimarossa currently up on WTSO, but I have four down in the cellar. I might just pop one the next time I have a hunk of cow. The lowest CT rating is 91. My favorite local wine store turned me on to Tor Kenward wines; I’ve really liked all three of the reds I’ve tasted so far. A bottle of the Torchiana Chardonnay just arrived at my office today from WL, which is also offering the Cuvee Susan and the Rock Syrah Hudson Vineyard. So it would appear that Gary also agrees that the man makes some stuff worth drinking.

  11. awm

The Tor Kenward Mast is actually a pretty good deal with free shipping. Definitely worth a try.

  12. RonDarling

Had my first visit to the store today. Damn that Pesto was good!

  13. DrB

    kenward…

Looks like the competition is really going after cindy for advertising a napa cab as tomorrow’s offering. this is the second napa cab in 24 hours they’ve offered after a couple of weeks without a serious cab. any thoughts on Tor Kenwood? I’m inclined to give cindy her chance, I figure we might be in about the same price range tomorrow but cindy hasn’t failed me yet…

  15. OldWorldLover

@D-Rod: I asked CW/WL in the past if they can show the alcohol content here, and they started doing it shortly after. These guys really listen, and that’s what I really love about these guys.

  16. Brooks

@ Inspector D-Rod. Once again the wine loving public is safe. Thanks for pointing out again the trickanery that lurks for the Vaniacs ( stolen from Green Pea) on other online websites! Being a Charter Member and Co-Founder BSC, we all owe you a big thanks. Decant early and often. I raise my glass of 2005 Buehler cab sauv to you. Buehler… Buehler…. Buehler. Role call: How is Uncle Albert? Hope he is doing well. We need him for his opinion on this Big Red for tomorrow night!

  17. D-Rod

See this is why I like CW so much. The sheisters on the other site put “90pts BY ROBERT PARKER” at the top of the description. If you know that Robert Parker doesn’t personally review many Spanish wines, then you know something’s clearly amiss. At the bottom you see 90pts Wine Advocate and (in small print) written by Jay Miller. That’s a big friggin difference if you know what I mean.

At Cindy you get all available scores from major publications, whether they’re good or bad. And they don’t try to pass off JM scores as Robert Parker. Just increases my confidence overall in transparency and how much they care about their customers.

  18. NCWino

@Vino A 90 rating by Jay Miller is worth a 75 avg. rating on CT. Read the tea leaves, my friend, it’s a no buy, no buy!!

  19. Ian

@Vino: it has an interesting 75-point rating on CellarTracker. I’d bet one bottle of the Venus is a lot better than two of the Tagonius.

  20. Powderfinger

I was reading an older post about how wonderful it would be if Lan Culmen was a CW. YEAH that would be sweet.

  21. Thin Man

njAndrew. I was also of thinking that it might be Pine Ridge, jus a gut feeling or maybe wishful thinking. I picked up a bottle at the WL and had it recently I enjoyed it and if it is the Friday Cindy wine I will get more.

  22. njAndrew

@tommyr, yea, they have it at WL and it keeps selling out so no change that is going to show up here.

Re Friday, Saw somewhere else guesses for Cliff Lead or Pine Ridge, both were in the mystery packs so WL has a relationship with them. Remember a Flora Springs was in the mystery pack A and then a different one showed up on Cindy a few weeks later.

  23. Vino

What do you think of the Spanish wine on the other site?

  24. Ronc

    @tommyr: Don’t hold your breath.

  25. tommyr

    Caymus 2007?

  26. kurt

@ Ian. Thanks for clarifying. appreciate it.
    Cheers!

  27. Ian

@kurt: Gotcha…you’re right, these people have only entered scores with no tasting notes (unfortunately). Nothing is hidden–that’s all the info available. Search the site and look at other wines…many will have reviews with written tasting notes given. It’s a little frustrating when you get smaller production/lower distribution wines like this one because you don’t get much CT support. With the higher production wines, you’ll see that most have several, if not dozens, of quality reviews with detailed tasting notes.

  28. kurt

@Ian. thanks. So for example, when I click the cellartracker link for this wine on the bottom right of page, it takes me to the CT page and under Community Tasting History it shows:

Tasted by cns on 12/21/2009 & rated 93 points: (465 views)
Tasted by Näsa on 5/11/2009 & rated 87 points: (250 views)

So it shows two people and what they scored the wine but nothing else. Does this just mean these people only scored the wine but did not write any tasting notes? I was thinking that there were tasting notes written (hence why it shows the high number of views) but that I couldn’t see them. Sounds like that is not the case?

  29. Ian

@BrooklynMD: my two cents for a drinking window on this wine: 2007-2014

  30. Ian

@kurt: Not sure exactly what you mean regarding the CT reviews. When you go to a specific wine’s page, it will show “Community Tasting Notes,” if there are any, listed chronologically. You may have reviews with no comments hidden; in this case, notice the “click to show notes with and without comments” on the same line as “Community Tasting Notes” and this will make these hidden scores appear. I believe that the number of views listed at the end of each note is simply the number of times that note has been displayed anywhere on the CT site. Furthermore, PROFESSIONAL reviews must be manually entered by you. CT tells you if other members have entered Pro reviews (Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, International Wine Cellar, etc.), but you must enter the info yourself. Does this help?

  31. kurt

    @ All.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but being new to CellarTracker I notice sometimes there are what look to be reviews by people (being it shows the number of views) but I cannot see them? I recall hearing something about needing to be a member or subscribe to it etc. Can anyone let me know if this is the case and the process?
    thanks much

    All -

GV is doing the leg work for us researching the wines and bringing them here to enjoy (or hate)… I have seen some good offerings in the past – and those of very high quality – so that I am completely in for the concept. CDP is a very good region and I have traveled there extensively and tasted many good wines firsthand… Maybe one day we’ll discussion on them. I am glad more information is forthcoming on different wines and regions so that people are well groomed on the information. I am all for the beautification of America when it comes to wine education – the more the merrier. The only comment I have for this AM is that there should be a good balance between old world wines and new world wines so that the tastes (and discussions) could revolve around learning about them. As for quality-to-price ratio discussions, they are very valid and should be a part of considering any wine. Obviously, there’re two approaching to buying any quality wines: buy it young and approachable (price-wise) – for this one needs knowledge and a good head; buy it aged and ready to be consumed – for this you need a deep pocket. The latter is not interesting to me as a lot of wine talk is removed for the obvious reason. The former is very interesting but can be overwhelming since it requires a lot of research and is prone to mistakes. Hence, the discoveries are associated with struggle (of a sort) where quality and price have to go hand-in-hand, SO – the discussions we had and will have are all valid. They are not whining and have nothing to do with that. But on the contrary, are very appropriate when considering any purchase – no matter the wine at hand. I guess, maybe CW or GV is able to somehow separate the tasting discussions from the strategy discussions since they have very different flavors….

  33. Kittysafe

@BrooklynMD, I still have a few bottles of the Lan Culmen in the wine cellar, forgot all about that! Indeed a nice wine, would love to see it up here on Cindy.

  34. PeteLI

All – at 11:53 AM CNBC is running a quick segment on why california wine prices are going to fall. Based on lack of demand for $50.00 bottles….

    Cheers
