"The 2001 Scrio, 100% Syrah, with an expressive and expansive nose of blackberry fruit, cured meat, mint, and vanilla, is equally important on the palate, round and concentrated and with a warm, dense, and substantial finish. Drink: 2006-2018." -95 points- Daniel Thomases- Wine Advocate
"Lots of blackberry and currants on the nose, with hints of roasted coffee. Lots of wood. Tight. Full-bodied, with fine and silky tannins and a long finish. Firm and well-structured. Pure Syrah. Best after 2006. 330 cases made." -91 points Wine Spectator
"Vineyards lay on argillous soils of medium texture with alluvional skeleton and calcareous pebbles. Harvest is done during the 2nd to 3rd weeks of September. Fermentation and maceration for about 20 days. This wine is aged for 14-16 months in 225 liter oak barriques. Deep and crisp ruby red color. Very persistent balsamic notes. Round in tasting, its acidity gently melts with sweet tannins. Hints of mint and eucalyptus." -Winery

Bring the thunder GV… don’t hold back
you hype it, gary!!
@ GV ….Do it baby………….
in 5 minutes we are gonna get some peeps hyped up!
At the risk of sounding like a fanboy for the 10th time, I’m with tommyr on this one. Being in finance I deal with more sheister gurus than you can imagine. But Gary’s legit and you can tell, and that’s why I like him and the whole operation as much as I do. As for the hype: hey man, you’re allowed to get excited about certain things. I wasn’t all that excited about the Brunello offering that was mega-hyped a while back, but I’m not all that big on Brunello so that’s that. If it were something silly like a Cote Rotie on the other hand…
ahhh!!
getting anxious!!
@Green Pea Thanks for the heads up about the free shipping items. Are there always this many? I always though there was just one a day. This is a nice find!
GaryV hyping wine? He always lists the ratings of all the “experts,” even if lower than the highest rating accorded, he disses wines in his inventory if not to his liking and, unlike Zachy’s, he doesn’t prop up the retail price by 25% in order to pretend to discount and he doesn’t currently sell Sierra Carche and Pico Madama (like Zachy’s now does). And he openly admits to being a Jets’ fan. He might be enthusiastic but he’s got a load more integrity than almost any other wine merchant in the country (and loads more than any Wine Advocate reviewer).
CW please a nice CDP tonight. Please!
@sneener… Labastida Castillo Rioja Reserva 2001. It’s on the front page for a mere 14.98 Not a bad table wine from Spain. Nothing that you can cellar because it’s nearing it’s end but with the free shipping and me needing everyday wines, I couldn’t pass. If you go to the free shipping item of the day, there is a link on the left side of the page that will take you to all 50 along with a code.
@Green Pea @Sneener Havens B and B was a CW for 29. I missed this as the BSC was not formed yet. Afterward it was 34.95 Btls as I bought 2 as traveling mates for a case of Havens B at 19.95/Btls. Bummer 39.95 now. Well I guess CW/CL recognizes this wine is _______ (avoiding any hype words but this wine speaks to you). Bring on tonights wine. Chin straps on!!
Long time fan of this site, first post @GreenPea, you are correct Havens B&B was $34.95, it became $39+ right after the Bourriquot offer at $19.98. I found that to be strange but we carry on. Good to be on board I’m a novice and I hope I can contribute to this site as much as I will learn from it.
@GreenPea – what was the repeat? I’m curious now. Cheers
Can’t wait for the Cali Cab on Friday. I’m guessing (and hoping) it’s the 07 Pride. It would be the greatest deal ever if GV can get some more 07 Snowden Reserve.
@Sneener…Well don’t hold me to that but like I said I could have swore it was 34.95 If so, that would seem to be the case. I ordered 5 different wines today and one of them was a repeat. I believe it was the same price today as the first time I ordered so in that case there was no mark up. Honestly It may just be a demand thing or my bad memory
@tommyr- I’m glad you enjoyed the Bourriquot it makes me proud to be BSC member.
@GreenPea – thanks for the info. Hrm. So I guess the increase in price takes care of the shipping. haha.
@Sneener I am almost possitive the Havens was $34.95 not long ago. I may be wrong but I remember looking at it real hard and then giving it a pass. It’s under the free shipping today along with 49 others.
Was the Havens b&b always under free shipping? Is $39.98 too high?
i’ve made similar comments regarding the ‘over-hyped’ criticisms, to which i was personally harped at-
but i do think it is out of hand when the complaints get to the level they’ve been. personally, if you don’t like an offer for whatever reason, you just DON’T buy that night. it’s as simple as that!! there is no need to take up 3 pages of forum describing each reason why you yourself did not partake in the current offering.
mostly, it seems to be about pricing. which really irks me, since really good wines take a lot of effort, and time- and you don’t get to pick that up for $15-$20.
i am not a wealthy person, but i WILL ‘invest’ in quality. sometimes if the pocketbook allows, i will splurge on that $100 bottle. but please, don’t gripe and complain when a $200 is only offered at a $100 discount-
the expectations of more than that are borderline ridiculousness. CW is still a business after all!! you can’t expect them to give away stock @ cost!!!
Cousin Eddie, ouch. Do you think it smells like pig poo?
@Vino Avoid the deal like it was Cousin Eddie in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
What do you think of the pink champagne on the other site?
@WineLou, I expect the lack of defense on GV’s hype is at least in part to seeing this or a very similar complaint posted so often. Personally, I see a difference in the way wine is advertised in email versus on CW. It isn’t like GV is on here every night saying each offer will be a can’t miss. Even fewer are actually advertised beyond the CW email sent out. To that extent, I really don’t understand the hype complaint as it refers to CW. In terms of the WL emails, sure most of them do have heavy support from the WL crew so I get this concern a bit more. Still, I really don’t have much trouble sifting through all the email to pick and choose what I want based on my own interests (often price and region/country narrow it for me rather quickly)…
Well said, WineLou.
@Wine Cutter:
you know, i was planning to pass on that offer-
but it seems like the feedback i’ve gotten has all been good! i was doing a little research to see what the going rates are, and i’m finding the ’02 around $39. but according to people reviews- the ’99 was quite fine! and this vintage goes for around $60, but also has a longer drinking window(thru 2021!) that being said, how do you feel about consuming a wine in the last couple years or so of its estimated drink date?
Surprised to see the complaints about GV’s “hype”, with limited defense. I buy from a number of places (including K&L). I’ve never met GV. But I’ve also never met a wine retailer who will say, as Gary regularly does on WLTV, “this is a disppointing effort”, “I can’t recommend this wine at this price point.” This is on wine WL has in inventory! While most merchants will tell good customers they might like to try something else, I’ve NEVER heard one other than Gary regularly say that an in stock wine isn’t worth purchasing. And with casual customers, most retailers will push two types of wine: what is not moving and what has the highest markup. THAT is “hype.” Gary gets excited about wine he likes a lot and good values. I can’t think of a CW wine that I didn’t think had some merit to some people, even if I had zero interest in it. Sure, GV and CW are selling wines to make a profit. (If they don’t make a profit who will pay for all this bandwidth?) But for those who think he’ll hype whatever he thinks he can sell, bear in mind that we are copying what GV said first when we say that a wine is a “pazz”.
@rose re: Trefethen – I personally am a fan of this winery. While I don’t think their wines will ever break into cult status, I have always had a very pleasant and happy experience drinking them. Though they are not cheap, they are usually a good value when compared to what you get from some of the other Napa Cabs. In fact, one of the best wines I ever had was a 1992 Trefethen Library Selection Cab…which I saved and drank in 2006. I am thinking seriously about grabbing a few of these myself (though I already have a few Trefethen wines in the cooler).
@Brooks & @Mr. Kite:
Well said, both of you. Clearly I’m still here, buying wine.
Just skipping a lot of comments.
Regards and cheers!
I gave in! Now no more wine-buying for remainder of February, including whatever deal may show up on Friday, unless I can land another contract this month (which is very unlikely).
I figured all the hype for the Bourriquot was a bit exaggerated. I decanted today for about 6 hours and,. . . wow! I am so tired of all the one-dimensional yet relatively expensive wines I’ve been drinking lately, steeped in black current or dark plum nose and taste. The Bourriquot is complex, delicious. Thanks all for the recommendation (alas, I only picked up 2 several weeks ago).
One bit of feedback I have for CW lately (if your listening) is the requirement for free shipping seems to have gone up over the last few months.
Case and point with this offering, requiring spending $160 to get free shipping is bit on the high side. This is literally the ONE area where I feel Cindy (and WL as a whole) is missing the mark.
@Brooks and Mig. I agree with both of you sometimes this place gets out of hand, I read some of the attacks and counter attacks last weekend and I was not as much surprised as I was puzzled by the regional flavor that was present in these “debates” We all know there are two people on this site that will forever be oil and vinegar, but the sad part was how eager some other folks were to carry on their arguments to all time low levels. It was what it was, will it happen again I’m sure, does that make this site any less informative, no I don’t think so, It makes it human and sometimes it gets heated specially when you have two folks who for what ever reason rub each other the wrong way. I did not mention names because most of the regulars know who they are.
For the official archive: http://cinderellawine.com/feed/
At least, I treat it as an archive since google reader is able to pull up more than when you visit the site itself.
@rose: Trefethen traditionally has good structure. I don’t know anything about the 2002 vintage specifically, but typically Trefethen wine easily has the structure to last 8-10 years. As I say, I haven’t actually had this one, but I’d say it is probably in full stride right now. FWIW, WS says drinking window through 2012.
i actually have an order pending w/ WL, but i shot them an email and asked them to hold on to it, because i might be getting in a the friday night special!!
also, i’m teacher in good ol’ wisconsin der- and it was definitely a snow day for us yesterday!
I would love to push that buy wine button but I’m holding off till Friday’s Cali Cab, I hope it’s a good one at a real good price. Oh by the way the snow here is just getting out of hand.
@Brooks, Decaf! No way that swill is touching my lips, I am out of here (until 9pm)
@ Phred:
Thanks for the thoughts-
I was thinking it wasn’t *great* deal, but i was more concerned with its structure. i’m all for going in on a good wine with substance and spending a little extra, cause for the most part its true- you get what your paying for!
1 bottle with free shipping would’ve had me I think, but I don’t feel like spending close to $200 on 2 bottles of wine today.
@rose: I like the wine, but that isn’t a great discount, IMO. It is definitely good, and probably worth it at that price, just not an exceptional QPR.
Somehow I always find that when GV hypes an offer in advance, he throws in deals that I really like just few days prior to the big day. In the past, I held out and therefore missed out. Am I going to let the same happen today? Do I pull the trigger or not? I’ll post back in an hour or so, but I checked my bank balance 10 minutes ago and I’m strongly leaning towards buying…
hey! anybody have any thoughts on the “Trefethen Family Vineyards ’02 Cab” offering going on right now for $49.99?
Anyone have a point of view or know the deal with Daniel Thomases from WA? Just got into WA recently and noticed that Antonio Gallaini replaced him and they generally score wines very differently. I know i like Antonio’s taste, but unsure about Daniel. Any thoughts would be great.
“Poggio” means knoll, or small hill in Italian
You’ll see “Fattoria” a lot too = farm or homstead.
Might be helpful decoding labels. If not, forget I said anything…
