This was #50 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2008!.
"Shows focused aromas of boysenberry, blackberry and light vanilla. Full-bodied, with soft, round tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Beautiful and juicy. Drink now. 45,830 cases made. 50% Nero D'avola, 50% Syrah." -91 points Wine Spectator

"The Nero d'Avola and Syrah grapes are picked in the middle of September. The vineyard sols are predominantly clay and calcereous. This wine is vinified over a period of 12 days in temperature controlled fermenters followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation in French and American barriques for 8 months."

"It is even more intense and with a deep ruby red colour, beautiful notes of mature red fruits, and an underlying hint of spices conferred by these exceptional grapes. The palate notes the caressing elegant tannins that give it a long, warm persistent finish, making it stand out in a world context. Ideal accompaniment to roast, grilled meat, game and flavoured medium-aged cheeses." -Winery

This received an 87 point score by Ian D'agata of the International Wine Cellar. See the notes on Cellar Tracker here: http://www.cellartracker.com//wine.asp?iWine=552528

  10. josie

    Anyone else feeling the suspense??!!???

  11. snowback

I’d love to believe it’s a cult red but I’m sure we can all guess based on years of ratings-hype experience that it’s probably a Sauternes

  12. JerseyMark

Just got back from our dealer; WL. Big sign at the pickup window:

“Cinderella Wine orders may need 24-48 hours to be filled!”

Looks like the junkies can’t wait. As for me, I’ll be there tomorrow at 7am.

  13. josie

@Schmitty & Wine Econ – thx for the input. I’ve been treated to some serious Burgundies by a friend who can afford them, and what I’ve had has left me “in love”…but being in a different economic situation, wasn’t sure this deal would live up. Still not sure, but appreciate the opinions…will see what the weekend brings….

@BuffaloLou -I actually brought home the empty bottle from my birth-year Clos de Tart 1966, Morey St. Denis, that above-mentioned friend opened for me this summer…it wasn’t our favorite, but we didn’t leave any..!

  14. Lecter

    Don’t let me down GV…

I have really picky taste when it comes to Italian wines (lean more to CA), and this has been one of the few that I really liked. Had purchased 6 from WL at 24.99 on presale a number of months ago, have cracked one open and was very pleasantly surprised. The other 5 are in safe keeping.

  16. rose

    …who’s callin’ tails on that!!

  17. RonDarling

God I hope it is Yellowtail Shiraz at 4.99 a bottle.

  18. rose

    @cutter:
there’s no way i thought that was correct when i opened the link. that would piss probably EVERYONE off-
it may perhaps be the ’75 Quinta(i believe?) that was listed around $250-
    maybe thats it-

  19. schmitty

@WineEcon- not much experience means just what it is, to be honest- I have tried a few red Burgundies ( PNoir)- but have not had a single one, where I would have bought the same wine again- I wanted to try this one, upon recommendation, just to see, if I would be pleasantly surprised- but I was not……… maybe being a little too subtle for my taste……..

  20. philct

Actually going with: R Wines F U Shiraz 2004… as the description in WL looks like one we’d see on here..

  21. philct

Can’t be the Penfolds, can it?? I was just looking into getting some yesterday.. No way it can be it…

  22. Hinrgman

This was #50 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2008!.

    and no pumpkin???

  23. BuffaloLou

@D-Rod: I was in my 4th year of college when you were born! I have never had a wine older than me. Sad.

  24. WineEcon

@Schmitty–Not sure what “don’t have too much experience with burgundy” means, but I’ll note that red Burgundy (being PNoir) is paler than most non-PN wines (and “dark” PNs have often been blended with other richer-colored juice like Syrah to give them color and appeal more to non-Burg drinkers). It sounds like this LeFlaive Burg may be nothing special (although Burgs can also be wonderfully subtle, given time and the right temperature), but one thing that grabs me about good Burgs is how flavorful they can be while having such light color. I tend to associate the richness and body of a wine with deep, dark color (reflecting my preference for Bordeaux and Bordeaux blends) so Burgs can be surprises for me.

    FWIW…

  25. Wine Cutter

It ain’t going to be the 1963 Quinta Do Noval Nacional…there would be a revolt if Gary was super-hyping a CW offering that ended up being over $1,000/bottle. I, for one, would be pretty pissed off.

  26. schmitty

@ Josie- I picked up a bottle of the special Burgundy e-mail offering- and I am not thrilled…….however, I also admit, i don’t have too much experience with burgundy, but the color already turned me off. It is very pale, nearly ‘see through’ compared to most other wines I tried, nice tingle on the tongue, but it leaves me wanting for more………more anything………..it is very ‘light’, easy to drink…….not much substance, though, for my taste. Sorry-again, I am not a burgundy expert, but I will not buy this one again.

  27. rose

    AHH!!!
    what!?
finally a port- and its going to be $2,000!!!
    does WL give loans!

  28. awm

I am going with the 2004 Grange not because this thing is not moving at this price at all. IMHO, it is way overpriced compared to other excellent vintages such as the 1998, 2001 and 2002 (which are at or closer to ideal drinking age).

  29. NY Pete

imho … with free shipping on a 1 bottle purchase, one thing can be assured … it will be pricey.

  30. Elcaro

I’m going with the 2004 Penfolds Grange (not on low inventory alert)

  31. D-Rod

lol @Dom: I’ve had a couple wines older than me. Not that hard when you know that I was born in ’84.

  32. TheWinedown

As long as the review wasn’t buy Wine Enthusiast! ;) Nothing against them, but that would such a let down tonight!

  33. Dom

Wow, a vintage port older than I…

  34. Sakas

Over on the forums they are saying that it’s going to be http://winelibrary.com/wines/67330-1963+Quinta+Do+Noval+Nacional+63+750ML

    ;-)

  35. tommyr

Perhaps the Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve 2006 for $65.99.

  36. Josie

I agree with Wine Cutter – this is going to be hefty no matter who scored it 99, with free shipping on one. My bet is also on a Port, or other dessert wine.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Leflaive Burgundy 06 offered today? I’m not a member of CellarTracker, and I’m not finding anything on other sites…TIA for info

  37. Ronc

My guess on tonight’s wine is the 2005 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate. Italian wines appear to be getting the deepest discounts lately.

  38. Sakas

It would be cool if it was the 2005 Château Doisy-Védrines that Gary gave a 99pts in his book! I’d be in big time if it was (already have a bottle, but would love more@). I don’t see it happening though…

  39. Dom

I stand corrected. I didn’t read through the entire email admittedly as I was quick to jump here to see people’s reaction and predictions to what the wine will be.

@pat, I got it as a WL newsletter.

  40. pat

@dom- Thank you…Was it the CW Letter cause I have not gotten that email yet

  41. Wine Cutter

“Free Shipping on 1 bottle”…means that even with the massive discount this is still going to be close to $100/bottle.

  42. NoWineWiz

Hello, my name is NoWineWiz and I am a lurker.

Now with that out of the way, and not to break the excitement for tonight, but is anyone familiar with the MERONI 1997 AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA RISERVA “IL VELLUTO”? The site is selling it for $43.98 – normally $100. There is some information on CT, but not sure if it is the Riserva and there are no sites selling it to compare prices.

Oh yea, first time poster, long time buyer, bordering on a SIWBM.

  43. BuffaloLou

@Dom: re: 40%: “All in all, tonight’s wine will feature a savings of 40% vs the lowest price on Wine-Searcher!”

  44. njAndrew

    @Dom, email states

“Tonight’s wine will feature a savings of 40% vs the lowest price on Wine-Searcher!” not MSRP

  45. njAndrew

As @samK mentioned, it might not be in the system yet. There have been a few recent Cindy offers that popped up on ‘Just in’ after appearing on Cindy.

@Wine Cutter might be right, Gary said he is excited to see our reactions, don’t know if the Grange reaction would be all that crazy but with the past requests for a port offering one up now would get some people excited.

Most likely will be too $ for me even with the 40% discount but I will be on at 9 to see what it is.
