"The 2003 Barolo Monprivato is made in an atypically big, powerful style loaded with ripe fruit supported by plenty of structure. It boasts an enticing palate presence and a uniquely intense personality. The classic Monprivato notes of ripe cherries, roses, minerals, flowers and herbs are present, but they don't have the clarity and precision of the finest vintages. In 2003 Mascarello was more severe than normal in his green harvesting of the vineyard as he wanted to lighten the load on his plants to reduce their stress. He was also helped considerably by the compact, moisture-retentive soils. Readers who prefer more classically-styled versions of Monprivato may want to revisit the 1999 and 2001 although Mascarello told me he prefers the 2003 to the 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2023." -93 points- Antonio Galloni- Wine Advocate
"Medium red. Quite closed on the nose a month after the bottling, hinting at strawberry, mocha and musky underbrush. Then big, rich and expansive in the mouth, with a distinctly fatter texture than the 2004 if less complexity. A broad, dry wine that's huge for a Barolo from this address. Intriguing fungal nuance. Finishes with a perfumed character, but ultimately less high-pitched than usual for this superb bottling, with a narrower range of aromas. " -91 points- Stephen Tanzer- International Wine Cellar
"The Mauro Mascarello family MONPRIVATO vineyard is located in the village of Castiglione Falletto, and is a classic prime medium-hillside site stretching over six hectares (15 acres) at 280 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Barolo wine-growing area. It is historic vineyard, as is confirmed by old land registry archives dating back to 1666."
"Harvested around the middle of October. Estate-grown bunches thinned during the summer undergo traditional-style, floating cap fermentation for 20/25 days. The wine is then matured in medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels for around 38 months. The color is garnet red with orange-coloured highlights. The nose is complex, very fruity, elegant, intense, spicy, with flowery sensations. On the palate, this wine has excellent body with power and stuffing, demanding, masculine, long and full. Aging potentional: 15/25 years." -Winery

There used to be clues and guesses. Lots of fun… ah for the good old days.
Hoping for something good to cap off the week…
Today I received a case of wine from a store in New York. It was packaged in a flimsy recyclable cardboard tray. The surrounding box was single wall corrugated material. How all 12 bottles showed up to my door in a UPS truck without being broken is beyond me. Anyhow it was defiantly cheap packaging but it worked. The plus is all of it is recyclable and it will all make it to the trash.
Almost time.. Is that thunder I hear??
I’ve built a house out of the styrofoam from my purchases from the WL….It’s great in the summer, but the winters are brutal…..
The earth covers roughly 37 Billion acres, and weighs approximately 120,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or 120 Septillion Pounds. I am not so arrogant as to think that my consumption of a few ounces of styrofoam (which promptly goes into the trash and then to a landfill in one of those 37 billion acres) would have any real impact. Thus, I will gladly accept my wine however Wine Library chooses to ship it…just keep the deals coming.
to JustinM: just a joke, my friend, just a joke. How in the heck do you reuse those things? Are you in the wine shipping business? Maybe they could be pool floats or something. I’m all in favor of reducing unnecessary waste where possible, but I do not subscribe to the Church of Green if it is going to cost significantly more.
BTW, I used to work for a winery (remain nameless) and we shipped wine using all corrugated cardboard like this: http://www.naylorpackaging.com/packaging_specialty.asp
I am not aware of any breakages, but I don’t think it is secure as the styro that WL uses. I personally don’t want my $1,000/case wine dripping out the back of the UPS truck.
I’ve received a number of bottles through other online retailers using entirely fitted/folded cardboard shipping products without any breaks. As I understand it, the shipping material cost is less and obviously entirely recyclable or compostable, but there is a time expense in assembling the shipping inserts.
Assuming that eco-friendliness introduces a cost, I prefer remaining eco-unfriendly. And if cinderella wine seeks to retain their position as cost leader, and thus my business, they should avoid such costs. If there are no superfluous costs, save the environment!
wanted to buy: someone to build my dream wine cellar now, as if I keep coming onto this website I’ll have to dig a hole in the yard to store it all away from my wife!! LOL.. I so need to build my cellar already…
@Brad B. wth?
Anyway, I actually reuse the WL packaging many times over. I don’t think I’ve thrown one away yet. Would be cool for WL to try out some eco-friendly options. Change the wine world, baby
I am currently recycling my Styrofoam packs and boxes and using them as a beautiful storage for my wine.
Aka, my wine rack is full and they are staying in my closet.
I propose that Al Gore hand deliver all our Cinderella wine in his private jet to save the environment. Seriously. He claims he is carbon-neutral, so why not?
Kittysafe, you may be right but in my case the fedex truck is on my street every day and I’m sure they are at WL many times a day. It may not take extra trucking to do this. Even so, you can’t have a perfect solution. By applying my suggestion you keep those materials from going in the landfills, you save trees from making new boxes and you save the gas needed to bring those new boxes and styrofoams to WL. Cheers!!!
For all who are worried about the environmental effect of shipping wine……I’ll sell you a carbon offset for $2/bottle.
Cannot wait for the comments when the new eco-package delivers a broken bottle. I have received many packages from WL/Cindy w/o a broken bottle – I have even stopped taking the extra insurance option too. I want my wine delivered safe…
I had suggested some of these more eco-friendly options to CW a couple of weeks ago. I even suggested they launch the campaign with some organically produced wines (maybe from Oregon/Washington). The CW staff contacted me and said they are working to develop a greener approach.
GFdionysos, that’s not eco-friendly either as it uses more gas to take all the packaging back and forth.
CW could give customers the option to pay a little extra for a return label of the packaging. We re-seal the box, apply a return label(included) and ship it back. CW in return can re-use both the box and styrofoam and contribute the amount those materials cost to the return shipping and we pay the difference. Make it optional to those willing to pay for it only.
I don’t know if it makes $ sense, but it’s a start.
I agree on the styrofoam, far too much packaging. If we’re changing the wine world, let’s start by making it better for the environment.
I’d like to suggest that WL/CW explore more environmentally friendly packing solutions. SO MUCH Styrofoam! How about recycled paper based inner bracing?
Thank you all for getting a sellout before I was able to log back on. Grabbed 1 last night to hold for a while and was thinking of getting a second but have spend to much on Cindy this past month I don’t even want to think about it.
Damn you Cellar Tracker, 13 times and lost of cash, I need help!
Love to see the tasting notes on Cellartracker.com, MikeK and Kitty, on the Finca and Elias. Nice job WL!
lol, PhilCT, we were both saved. Really looking forward to trying this out, but I’m glad I only went in for 1.
Way to go Cindy – stayed out till dawn and I bet you loved it – habit forming though, so do it again – tonight.
Love seeing the pumpkin, after I ordered a bottle… Was going to buy another this morning so I could open one lay one down, ahh well… evil evil site
Another pumpkin. Good job CW.
I loved NYPete and JBoz comments, and feel the same way. LMAO! I love/hate this site! I have purchased 3 times, CDP- cellared both, Elias Moro popped 1 decanted it for 2-3 hours and it was fantastic with pork tenderloin! Cellared the other 2. I’m in for only 1 tonight, but added 8 bottles from my WL wishlist…damn it; I was trying to save for the big offer in December. Cindy has been just right!
Castello –
I bought 3 bottles of the Elias Mora, cellared 2, opened one, and love love love it. Yes it needs time, but I knew that going in. The other wine I bought from Cindy is the Sandoval, also 3 bottles, cellared 2, opened 1, very good bottle of wine. SO maybe I’ve just been lucky, and though I’ve passed on most wines, that’s mostly because I’ll be in New York and need to save the money… but I’m 2 for 2 so far with Cindy.
