Description:

2005 Merum Priorati Ardiles:
"The 2005 Ardiles is composed of 45% Garnacha, 34% Carinena, 18% Syrah, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark ruby-colored, it reveals an alluring bouquet of slate, mineral, cherry, and blueberry. Seamless on the palate, this is a forward Priorat for drinking over the next 8-10 years. It is also an excellent value for a wine from this increasingly expensive D.O." 91 points - Jay Miller - Wine Advocate (02/08)

"Dark red. Seductive perfume of raspberry, minerals and Asian spices. Clean and deep in red fruit flavor, picking up suave floral pastille and baking spice character with air. Very light tannins seem to fade into the sweet fruit on the long, juicy finish. Even more elegant than the 2004." 91 points - Josh Raynolds - International Wine Cellar (10/07)

"Blueberry, anise, mint and vanilla mingle in this vibrant red. Velvety yet firm on the palate, with lively acidity and a juicy finish. Drink now through 2015. -TM" 90 points Wine Spectator (11/07)

WINE:
"The grapes used to make this wine were carefully selected by hand by combining both old and newer vineyards of excellent quality, in order to create this wine dominated by the distinctive characters of the Grenache and Carignan. Special plots of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon have been included in the blend to give a greater complexity. After fermentation at controlled temperature, each variety is aged separately for 12 months in French oak barrels, both new and second year."

"The color is ruby red with pink nuances. There are plums, raspberries, and blackberries that fill the aroma along with hints of vanilla and slate (licorella). The palate is sweet and tasty, with hints of guava and kiwi. Displays solid tannins accompanied by a long finish and a balanced structure." -Winery

WINERY:
"Grown to the east of the Priorat, in Porrera. Here, where nature provides exceptional conditions for winemaking we add the craftmanship of man. We do this in a new spirit, based on perfectionism and a complete dedication to the creation of the original wines of the highest quality." -Winery

2009 La Cova Dels Vins Ombra Montsant:
"Bright red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, minerals, flowers, camphor and spicy oak. Energetic, bright and sweet, with lovely spicy lift to flavors of red berry preserves, herbs and mocha. Offers impressive balance and energy, with no rough edges, finishing tangy, focused and long, with delicate tannins. The garnacha vines are reportedly more than a century old." 90 Points - Josh Raynolds - International Wine Cellar (12/10)

WINE:
"La Cova dels Vins is owned by Fraancesc Perello who studied enology in Falset and Tarragona and in 1997 joined the technical team at Celler de Capcanes, as a winemaker. La Cova dels Vins project began in the winter of 2002. While pruning at Els Masos vineyard, Francesc's father was telling stories about their ancestors and commented that it would be great to make a single wine from that vineyard as it was done in the past. Els Masos is planted to 100 year old Garnacha on licorella schiste soils."

"Due to the small production of this vineyard, it was decided to incorporate some Garnacha and other varieties from other vineyards. The estate is located in the DO Montsant. The vineyards are located in Falset and Capcanes, between 300 and 700m above sea level. The wines are characterized by several microclimates, all of them of Mediterranean influence, and with drastic temperature fluctuations."

"The 2009 Ombra is a blend of equal parts Garnacha, Carinena and Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 9 months in French and American oak." -Importer

REGION:
"This region takes its name from the majestic Montsant escarpment, reached by a 45 minute drive inland from the city of Tarragona, a one-time capital of the Roman empire. Once belonging to the D.O. Tarragona, the D.O. Montsant was founded in 2001 and comprises of over 5,000 acres of registered vineyards."

"While it is considerably larger than its interior neighbor (Priorat has less than 4,000 acres), it does not share the distinct terroir of Priorat. Montsant's soil type is a mixture of granitic sand, calcerous soil, large pebbles and shards of slate, which are found in varying amounts throughout the appellation. This wide diversity of soil types is reflected in the soil color which ranges from bright orange to snow white to earthy grey."

"Montsant receives more annual sun exposure than Priorat, but shares its temperate Mediterranean climate with little rainfall. Like Priorat, Montsant boasts many, if not more, of the low-yielding centennial vines that are so prized in both wine producing regions." -Importer
