"Loewen's 2010 Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling Spatlese - at 8.5% alcohol - represents a typical Mosel of its Pradikat, in contrast with the significantly drier, higher-alcohol approach he took this year with the corresponding Spatlese from Bruno Schmitt's Maximiner Herrenberg vines (reviewed in this report under Schmitt-Wagner). This was picked a few days ahead of the corresponding dry Laurentiuslay. Site-typical lime and orange give both pungently zesty and refreshingly juicy accounts of themselves, alluringly wreathed in lily of the valley and tinged with crushed stone, fennel pollen, and smoky black tea. Botrytis supplies a honeyed glaze without weighing-down a Riesling of delightful buoyancy or robbing a persistently interactive finish of sap. This fine value ought to be worth following over the next 15 or more years." |

"Energetic, idealistic young couple on a quixotic quest to gain renown for the great unknown sites of this part of the Mosel. Astoundingly reasonable prices for very high-quality juice! 'Cool' chalky-minerally style, as if the wines were blended with 15% Blanc de Blancs Champagne. All that's stony is not slate. Loewens have some wines on sand or gravel, and these have a 'northern' coolness without being explicitly slatey. The wines from the sirloin-quality Laurentiuslay have a fruit all their own: feline and nectarine-y. Loewen also places high emphasis on fruit-freshness: 'I don't like "old-wine" flavor and I definitely don't like this petrol taste,' he says." -Importer
