"Dark brooding fruits. Earthy and spicy with eucalyptus and a slight linty edge to the nose. The palate has assertive, clean-cut tannins that deliver a suite of dark cherry, pepper and chocolate flavors. Drink now." |
93 Pts Wine Spectator |
"Fragrant, with orange peel, white pepper, violet and toasted cumin notes complementing the fresh cherry and raspberry flavors. Shows plenty of polish and vibrancy on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 65 cases made. -MW" |

"This south-facing vineyard, planted in 1995, produces small berries in small bunches. Gary Mills ferments those bunches intact, without any additions, then racks the wine with its lees to used oak puncheons where it rests for 15 months. He turns out a black syrah with tart cherry fruit and bitter-chocolate tannins. It needs air to sort itself out, and as it does, the wineâs intensity turns toward grandeur. Built to cellar." |
Description:
Although it's essentially a warm, south-facing site, when you get the picking dates right, Pyren's fruit is wonderfully exuberant and balanced by keen, juicy acidity. In 2013 this was not only the surprise bottling, but quite possibly the best and the cooler, more acid driven 2014 doesn't disappoint. It's not the most seductive wine this year - in fact it's the most structured and sinewy, but there are amazing florals and incredible energy on the savory, complex, long and delicious palate. The structure means that the wine will benefit from time in the bottle, but man, it is already a special bottle.
100% whole bunch fermentation, 40 day extended maceration, indigenous yeast, racked to one and two year old French puncheons, sur lees for 15 months, gravity racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered. No acid, enzymes or additives other than a small amount of sulfur dioxide was used in production.
The darkest, most brooding of all the Jamsheed wines â savory and powerful. Possesses a similar aromatic spectrum to the âSevilleâ (licorice, lack fruits), but carries greater intensity and far more mineral character that speaks proudly of the quartz laced pink granitic soil it hails from. Again, tastes of minerals and black fruits, finishing with impressively fine, long tannin. This is a beast of a wine, yet carries its power with such finesse and balance." - Importer
