It represents the pinnacle of varietal perfection from one of the best vintages on record in Montalcino. The wine opens to a beautifully saturated ruby color with vibrant crimson highlights. It shows an enormous sense of inner energy and vitality characteristic only of the best quality grapes. It continues to deliver crisp tones of small forest berry, pressed violets, wet earth, white truffle, licorice, balsam herb and all the other lovely aromas that are so distinctive in wines from this stunning part of Tuscany. The tannins are firm and linear, adding a great sense of support at the back and lingering persistency. The wine is profoundly beautiful today and shows all the criteria necessary for 20 years or more of cellar aging. Brunello Madonna Delle Grazie represents the enormous promise of Montalcino."

"From a special selection of Sangiovese grapes harvested in the vineyard closest to the 13th-century church named Madonna delle Grazie, this is a complex and elegant wine with classic fruity notes and an elegant, lingering finish. A great meditation wine.

The history of Il Marroneto begins in 1974 when Giuseppe Mori, a Siena lawyer and father of the current owner Alessandro Mori, purchased a small property in the northern area of Montalcino at 350mt asl. Along with his two sons, Andrea and Alessandro, Mori decided to make Brunello, a ‘bit for fun and a bit for passion’, using two small rooms in the historical building dating back to 1246 which was part of the property: a central tower that was once used to dry chestnuts (castagne or “marroni” in Italian), long a source of flour in Italy, which inspired the winery’s name.

The vines were first planted in 1975 near the church of Madonna delle Grazie (which is where the estate’s top Brunello comes from). The rest of the estate’s vineyards were planted in 1979 and 1984, at that time entirely with clonal selections of sangiovese from the University of Pisa. The estate first made a Brunello in the 1980 vintage (only 1,855 bottles, with production rising to a whopping 2,555 in 1982). After these small steps Il Marroneto began to evolve; the cellar was enlarged and while the father and son Andrea decided to continue their career as lawyers, Alessandro, once a lawyer himself, decided to pursue his passion and since 1993 has taken over the family business on his own.

There is no doubt that knowledgeable Brunello fans consider Il Marroneto to be one of the top estates in Montalcino today. This is because over the last ten years, with the increasing age of its vines, Il Marroneto has been the source of some of the purest, most perfumed and most archetypal renditions of sangiovese made anywhere. Anyone who has tasted Mori’s wines won’t be surprised to know he considers his two mentors to have been Mario Cortevesio (who had long worked in Chianti) and Giulio Gambelli, two acknowledged fathers of great sangiovese wines of exceptional purity and breed." - Importer
