Considered by some to be "the most beautiful village of France," Seguret was named a CDR village in 1967. The slopes are steep and stony, with great drainage and limestone-rich soils. The Swiss founder of Malmont has conquered them using none other than Spanish terracing techniques!
It's the ultimate of international wine stories.
Nicolas Haeni's family is originally from Switzerland. He and his father Alfred came to the southern Rhone back in 1990. They took over Domaine de Cabasse and began producing estate-bottled wines. (The estate formerly sold only bulk wine.)
Nicolas started taming the high-elevation slopes of Malmont in 2005. Using precision-based agriculture and Spanish techniques, he terraced the rocky slopes of 4 hectares within Seguret. A year later, the vines went in the ground.
The 2013 Seguret CDR Villages Rouge is the eagerly awaited debut vintage of Malmont. Nicolas practices organic viticulture, and the grapes are all havested by hand. The blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Grenache is intriguing for southern Rhone, where Grenache usually reigns supreme. Syrah enjoys the unique mesoclimate of Nicolas's high-elevation vineyard and delivers dark, juicy fruits and distinct spice to the blend. Enjoy this wine now with lamb and eggplant dishes.
