92 Pts Stephen Tanzer - Vinous Media

"Moderately saturated medium red. Perfumed nose offers redcurrant, dried rose, cedar and earth. Silky, lush and suave; pliant and light on its feet. I find this brighter and more perfumed than past vintages of this cru. Finishes with firm, late-arriving tannins and noteworthy juicy persistence. I don't recall a better previous vintage under this label."

91 Pts Wine Spectator

"Gorgeous aromas of strawberry, raspberry and flowers. Full-bodied, with soft tannins and a long, velvety finish. Beautiful and rich. Balanced. Best after 2008. 1,400 cases made. -JS" (12/06)

90 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous

"The 2001 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is perhaps the least refined of these wines. It is a deeply expressive, masculine Barbaresco that presents a wilder, more animalistic expression of nebbiolo, with underlying notes of macerated cherries, licorice, tar and earthiness and a bold personality defined by its somewhat unpolished tannins. It is a little rough around the edges, but beautiful in its rusticity. This year's Asili is another winner. It opens with an utterly sublime nose that is followed by a lovely core of sweet red fruit, licorice, menthol and mineral nuances that reveal themselves as the wine sits in the glass. Expansive and long on the palate, this deceptively medium-bodied Barbaresco shows awesome purity and enough structure to drink well to age 20, perhaps beyond."

Description:

"Founded in 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. From its humble beginnings making the first three vintages in the church basement, Produttori del Barbaresco has grown to a 52 member co-operative with 250 acres of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation and an annual production of over 500,000 bottles. Its vineyards amount to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each member is in full control of their land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with the skill and dedication they have honed over generations.

Playing a key role in elevating the quality level of Barbaresco over the years, Produttori del Barbaresco produces a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe, a Barbaresco blend and nine single vineyard wines produced in premier vineyards: Asili, Rabaja, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Paje, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo.

This 21 acre single vineyard closest to the Tanaro river. The vines enjoy the heat of the morning sun in the summer and a more fertile soil than vineyards at a higher elevation. This microclimate translates to a Barbaresco with approachable tannins. Pora is best enjoyed in the first 20 years of its life.

The first vintage of Pora was produced in 1967.

Color: Ruby red.
Bouquet: Ripe, broad red fruit with an earthy character.
Flavor: Full-bodied and intense with rich tannins and a long finish.
Pairings: Pairs well with fresh egg pastas, risottos, white meats, red meats, venison and cheeses." -Importer
