91 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"For example, the 2011 Romanico (100% Tinta de Toro) was fashioned from yields of 22 hectoliters per hectare, and was aged six months in 100% new French oak. A sensational red, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet perfume of lead pencil shavings, violets, licorice, blackberries and black currants. Keep in mind that Tinta de Toro is essentially a cousin of Tempranillo, but a lower yielding grape. Full-bodied with a voluptuous texture and a long finish, it should drink well for 6-10 years. It tastes like a wine that costs $50 or more rather than $16.50."

"These are both sensational values from Toro, one of my favorite Spanish appellations in the province of Zamora. This estate largely follows organic viticultural practices in its north-facing vineyards. The soils are primarily sandy/loam, and all of the head-pruned vineyards were planted between 1880 and 1940, and the wines are made from tiny yields." (11/13)

91 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"(this 100% tinta de toro wine went through malo in new French oak and then spent six months in another set of new barrels): Bright purple. Intense dark berry aromas are complemented by potpourri, cola and vanillin oak. Broad, palate-coating blackberry and blueberry flavors become livelier with air and show an energetic spiciness. Finishes with very good clarity and juicy persistence, the cola and spice notes repeating." (10/13)

Description:

Winery:
"In this second stage of the Eguren family's presence in DO Toro after Numanthia-Termes project, Teso La Monja was born with a different approach: fresher, north facing loamy soils with gravel on the surface, which offer longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines which transmit the maximum potential of soils’ minerality. Toro's prephiloxeric vineyards, own rooted 'Vitis vinifera' and autochthonous, aged up to 130 years, and old vineyards with an average age of 50 years old, form a terroir that gives birth to unique wines."

"We fulfill the sustainable agriculture practices applied by our predecessors to preserve the life in the environment. We respect nature and we work according to the cycles and biorhythms of the plant. We search for the natural balance of the vineyard, with small productions between 1.000 and 2.000 kg/hct. We are focused on achieving the purest wine which transmits terroir." - Winery
