92 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"Glass-staining purple. Black and blue fruits on the nose, with suggestions of candied flowers, mocha and anise adding complexity. Gently chewy and broad, offering pungent boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors that gain sweetness and vivacity with air. Floral qualities come up on the finish, which leaves notes of berry preserves and floral pastilles behind." (05/12)

92+ Pts Jeb Dunnuck - The Rhone Report

"The most dense and structured of the lineup, yet still showing the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, the 2009 Olson Ogden Pinot Noir Alder Springs, 100% Syrah that's aged for 17 months in 57% new French oak, delivers a deep, smoke-laced array of black cherry, blackberry, graphite, leather, hints of chocolate, and serious minerality and rock characteristics on the nose. While very youthful, there is notable complexity and character here, and the slightly wild character of this vineyard certainly comes through, though it is certainly less feral and gamey than the prior vintage of this wine. On the palate, the wine is medium+ bodied and beautifully delineated and focused, with superb purity of fruit, fine tannin, and a classically styled finish. As with the other wines from this estate, this leans towards the elegant, finesse-driven spectrum as opposed to a richer, more powerful wine. It should benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink well for upwards of a decade or more." (06/12)

90 Pts Wine Enthusiast

"A dark plum and blueberry Syrah that's concentrated and full-bodied with back layers of cardamom spice that's big in the mouth and thick with tannins. Give it a chance to open and maybe even decant for a full experience of its intensity. The acidity in the wine will make it sing next to meaty meats." (08/12)

Description:

Wine:
"A full bodied wine with great structure, depth and concentration. Dark as night and opaque in the glass, it shows generous notes of blackberry and wild berry fruit laced with spice, white pepper, nutmeg, violets and a hint of mocha. The velvety tannins are delightful and the finish seems to go on forever. It could use some cellar time, 5 to 10 years, but don't be afraid to try this immense wine early on its life with a vigorous splash decanting." - Tim Olson, Winemaker

Alder Springs Vineyard:
"Alder Springs is located just outside of Laytonville in Mendocino County, an hour north of Ukiah. The vineyard is 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean and sits on an east facing mountain slope between 1700' and 2700'. The vineyard is farmed meticulously and yields are very low, ranging from 1.5 to 2 tons per acre. The resulting berries are small with a high skin to juice ratio which produces concentrated, intense wines."

"Stu Bewley and his team are the most dedicated and passionate farmers we have ever worked with. They are constantly innovating new techniques to fine tune an already great vineyard. Stu continues to experiment with new clones and rootstocks as well as leading edge varieties including Grenache, Roussanne and Marsanne." - Winery

Producer:
"Olson Ogden Wines is a small, artisan wine company located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. We specialize in small production, handcrafted wines. Our focus is on Pinot Noir and Rhone varietals, with an emphasis on vineyard designated Syrah's. We seek out passionate growers with special vineyards."

"Our primary goal is to produce balanced complex and tasty wines that express the terroir and vintage from which they come. Olson Ogden wines are made with food in mind as we feel that wine is an integral part of a good meal. Our winemaking style is rooted in traditional methods but is balanced by trial and error and creative innovation. Our wines are usually bottled unfined and unfiltered and will likely contain a natural sediment during their evolution. This results in an authentic and honest wine that is rich and complex and a pleasure to drink." - Winery
