Rating: 93 Points - The Wine AdvocateSize:750ML

Varietal: Cabernet Franc ABV:14%

"The 2005 Paleo (Cabernet Franc) is impressive. Wild herbs, roasted coffee beans, new leather, minerals and dark fruit emerge from this long, refined wine. Although the intensity tapers off slightly on the mid-palate, this is an absolutely gorgeous wine loaded with style and personality. Still tightly wound, it needs further bottle age to reach its peak. It is arguably the most successful of the estate's 2005s. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017." -93 points- Antonio Galloni- Wine Advocate

"Decadent aromas of berries, meat and earth follow through to a full body, with velvety, rich tannins, a long, flavorful finish and a coconut and berry aftertaste. Impressive. Cabernet Franc. Best after 2011. 2,000 cases made." -93 Points Wine Spectator

"Vineyards lay on argillous soils of medium texture with alluvional skeleton and calcareous pebbles. Harvest occurs during the 1st to 3rd weeks of September. Fermentation and maceration occurs for about 20 days. The wine is aged over a period of 14-16 months in new oak barriques, 90% of 225 liters, 10% of 112 liters. Deep ruby red color. Notes of blackcurrant, coffee, green tea and spices. A full bodied wine, very rich and deep in mouth, with very thick and elegant tannins. A long aging wine, with a strong character." -Winery

"Named for the vineyard of its provenance, Paleo Rosso is the flagship wine for Le Macchiole and was the first wine in Bolgheri to made entirely from Cabernet Franc. Ruby red with violet flecks, its red fruit aroma offers notes of yellow and black pepper, tobacco, and nutmeg. Clean on the palate, it finishes with elegant minerality, ripe fruit, and a hint of balsamic." -Importer

@BaroloDude: 100% Cab Franc is not my favorite wine. It’s the antecedent to Cab Sauv (a marriage of Cab Franc and Sauv blanc). And in my relatively brief experience mixing wines, the rule of thumb is that one adds Cab Franc to a blend largely to smooth out rough edges in the star ingredients. I readily admit that my experience with 100% Cab Franc wine is exclusively with Californian wines and maybe a handful of French offerings, but my experience is that it makes a better blending wine than it does a pure extraction.
That said, I’m happy to be convinced. While I passed on last night’s Paleo, I’ll be interested if you get good input to your Cab Franc, as I’d be up for spending up to $30 or so to try something different (at least for me).

I’m rather quite excited and probably will break EconIWBM just for the offer of the port.

    Can’t stand Bordeaux.
    Love Cab and/or merlot though…

  4. vineaux

I certainly like Bordeaux but the ones I really love have not come down in price as other markets did :-(

  7. johnr

  8. dionysos

  9. Kevin Causey

@GV, got the Chateau Cote Montpezat 2000 last year and have been hooked on Bordeaux ever since. Bring some thunder…

  10. winex

Definately like Bordeaux, Only issue I’ll be there in 6 weeks. So I may want to hold off, but I’ll have to see the deal & then I’ll probably choke. Had to repost to moderation

Open up a 2006 Shirverton sharze.. i think i spell it wrong… paring it with a Prim rib eye steak, top with blue cheese. Open the wine at4pm westcost.

  14. Kevin Causey

uh oh, GV’s on and asks who likes Bordeaux. Count me in.

    Who likes Bordeaux?

  16. abunai

@BaroloDude: Very few wineries messed up the 97. It was an easy vintage even for mediocre wine makers…

  17. BaroloDude

Let me start a last second string for those of you hitting refresh a lot already , waiting for the 6pm offer and trying to be FIRST ;-)

    Your favorite Cab Franc?

    Mine:
    - Del Dotto Howell Mountain (expensive as heck, but one of the most profound tastings i have ever had, so even the wife gave me permission to buy one)
    - Del Dotto Estate Cab Franc (at 60 a bottle, still not cheap, but darn easy going down for a CF… INCREDIBLE aromatics)
    - Ovid Experiment 1.5 (about 70 a bottle… needs a lot more time, not as approachable as the DD, but will be a monster someday, more right bank styled)
    - Pecota (no longer making this)… nice

You guys? I am intrigued by good Cab Francs and Petite Sirahs (love the Jacob Franklin/Elyse!), so any other recommendations would be appreciated.

I prob have to buy one of these Paleos just to sample it….

  18. abunai

@vineaux: Agreed. I have no problems with the B&B, Bourriquot and even the Merlot is decent at the heavily discounted prices

  19. vineaux

@abunai: except for the Havens Black & BLue’05 – I do love that wine… with a piece of filet mignon…and?

  20. BaroloDude

I had the 93 BV GLTour last year when it was sold at 40 a bottle! and to me it wasn’t that good for the price. Mind you i think the greatest bottle of Napa Cab I have ever had is possibly the 97 BV GLTour… (or a premium Del Dotto). SO my expectations were a little higher on the 93, and to me it just justified why it was cheap relatively.. now, at 20 bucks a bottle i would not have been disappointed… thats about right for what i tasted. Shucks. Oh well! There seems to be a lot of variation in BV GLT from vintage to vintage. THe 98 is good, the 97 is utterly stunning and brilliant, the 2000 was ok, the 2002 and 2003 so so… the 93 not so good… etc… the 06, which i just received as a gift, is getting mixed reviews… I think other premium Cab Sauv makers in Napa are doing a better job at being consistent from year to year. I hope BV finds a groove sometime soon and keeps the quality up higher….

Bluffan, welcome aboard. You will have a lot to offer this forum if you hang around and keep chiming in.

  21. vineaux

@johnr, washington, dc’s calvert woodley!! major bordeaux sale according to them?

  22. abunai

@patrick hill: I got burned by some of these cheap offers, too, including the Havens Cabernet H. I knew that I took a risk and it now stands in line with many other “value buys” for cooking. I think we could make Osso Buco every day for a month with all the wines that I have allocated to the cooking department…

    Where at vineaux?

  26. vineaux

    2000 Château Calon-Ségur – St.-Estèphe for $99.00 – decent discount for 3rd growth?

  27. johnr

And those 50% off was on the 1st traunch pricing.

  28. johnr

@WineLou. I agree with about the multi packs, it seems that the added wine gives GV for the brands in question, Lede and such. My I suggest to the management, a system were deals like the lede are offered on a email only or secured link were you would have to login to see the “deals” would save the brands and pass along the savings. A note, JJ Buckley is also great, they have some smoken deals on 2005 Bordeaux last week, 50% 1st and Super 2nd last friday!
