| Rating: | 91 Points - Daniel Rogov - Guide to Israeli Wines | Size: | 750ML |
| Region: | Galilee Heights | Country: | Israel |
| Varietal: | Cabernet Sauvignon | ABV: | 13.5% |
"Aged in oak for 15 months, the wine is dark, almost impenetrable purple in color. Firm tannins and smoky wood come together with currant, blackberry, plum and mineral aromas and flavors, those showing hints of Mediterranean herbs and light Oriental spices. Long and generous. Drink now-2012." -91 points- Daniel Rogov- Guide to Israeli Wines

a Rogov rated wine … tempting …. very tempting
@ Schmitty. Good call!
@Wineknurd- hey, GV already did better than that! How about that Lamborghini ( Campoleone 2004) for, I believe, around 34 dollar…….?
Thinman you get me every time. But you can’t deny it. I expect to see a 2009 Toyota Camry on here tomorrow night for $40! No way they sell for 30k now!
@WineKnurd : You are right on. Cindy is not a site to call out selections and hope Gary will put it up at a steep discount. It just doesn’t work that way. Cindy is a great site to pick up some good deals…..like some of the other sites noted here.
Thanks for the heads up WineKnurd did not know that, any way another wish on my list that will not happen for reasons the Knurd just informed us the uninformed. I WISH for 05 Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz with a discount against all odds.
You guys (and gals) realize that CW is an outlet to dump wines that don’t sell otherwise correct? Same with WTSO and all these other discount sites. Not saying you can’t get some good deals or good wines, but if it sells out at 100 bones / bottle, don’t expect to see it here for 40 USD.
@Kingphat: I quite enjoyed my first crack at that ’95 Burgess too, especially for the price.
Green Pea tell GV I would like 06 Mitolo shiraz (big ass wine) if he can get some more, if not I’ll settle for 04 Jonata Le Sangre syrah deeply discounted of course.
@ Dr. Unk and Powderfinger… I’m glad you two chimed in. I know have some wines to target and maybe Gary has access to them to help us out. Anyone else?
@DenverDarlin. Wow! If that is your pizza wine, I’d love to be invited for dinner when bistecca alla fiorentina is on the menu.
Opened the Solaria 123 ’01 brunello over the weekend. Let it breathe for about 4 hours. Paired it with a chicken/basil/dried tomato pizza from Whole Foods. Delicious! Thanks for the deal, Cindy!
Anyone in SC or VA want to get a bottle? Anyone?
@Green Pea- I would like to see 2004 San Roman Toro and/or 2005 El Puntido for around $20 -$25. Will it happen probably not but …….
Damn none of the NC Cindies want to give this a try. Might have to bite the bullet on 3. Will sleep on it.
1. The WS review is very curious. a) They liked the regular 2004 Galilee Cab (89 points) better than this single vineyard. b) They mention a very short finish, which is the opposite of the Rogov review.
2. Rogov is a tough critic. 91 points is a pretty big score in his book.
3. Reviews aside, I’ve had this wine. It probably wasn’t ready, nor was it decanted or open for long enough. The Rogov description is consistent with my recollection; big, inky, tannic, oaky and mineral driven. Reminded me of Chateau Musar (which I think is overrated, but many think is the greatest Cabernet blend bargain going). Not a refined wine, although aging/decanting might have brought the thing together better. I had it with the Segal’s 2004 Special Reserve Cabernet (see WL TV #422), and liked the Segal’s better.
4. @Kittysafe. Mevushal wine is no more Kosher than non-mevushal wine. The issue is whether non-mevushal wine can be served when less than observant jews or non-jews are also present. The rulings on this are complex, indeed I would argue (although this is not the place) that they make no sense. That being said, I have never felt it out place to ask a host in advance whether to bring non-mevushal wine. Note that there is no proscription against observant jews drinking non-mevushal wine among themselves, so you can always bring such wine as a gift, but if there will be people present who are not jewish and sabbath observing, don’t expect to share in drinking it. (If this seems hypocritical, that doesn’t seem to bother those who promulgate these rules.)
I had the 1995 Burgess Cab (from another site) and while it was under $20, I felt it had diminished a bit in quality. Maybe it was the oak, or that I didn’t decant it for hours, who knows. However, I have rarely been disappointed by Cindy or WL. Cautious is a good way to think about it. Tonight’s wine is probably a great find for someone looking for a Kosher Cab. For me, there are many others worth 25 bones, so it’s a pazz…..
@ Green Pea…I wouldn’t have a problem seeing the 2004 San Roman, the 2005 Villacreces or the 2007 Clio appear on here one night…..All solid wines that would be in striking range for most on here….
In all seriousness to Cindy/WL, WL has continued to deliver great value(although i wish your website was easier to navigate with simple drilldown tree menus, it’s kind of a nuisance as-is), but Cindy has actually lagged behind WL in my mind as of late, what we need from Cindy is equivalent to:
- Mount Cass
- 2005 Finca Sandoval
- Gran Elias Mora
- Solengo
- Bourriquot
- Charles Creek
Going forward maybe a serious chard for $15-19, a great pinot for $19-25, a Cali cab for $19, a crazy south american for $15, a wild spanish deal given the spanish closeouts out there, a fantastic merlot for $15, an trophy Chianti for $15. I’m willing to spend more, but at these price points i’m seeing these crazy deals on AWESOME wines.
I’ve been purchasing far more from others lately than from Cindy/WL. Time to step it up and not focus on just delivering lower than the lowest wine-searcher, but actually delivering serious values and palate expansion opportunities at great prices. If the trouble is getting close-out wines in mass quantities, maybe a low-price secret three pack where every pack is different, but huge values. Jay Miller ratings should be banned as well. my two cents.
We’ll be up late waiting for the pumpkin on this one! PAZZZZZZZZZZ!!
WS: “A ripe, full-bodied red, with plenty of fig and herbal overtones to the red berry and dark plum fruit flavors. There’s a short, mocha-infused finish. Kosher. Drink now. 200 cases imported. –KM”
Argh.. My comment was for @Alan sorry at @Allen
I guess Kosher wines demand a premium. Easy pass after risking money on the FU
@Allen drinking a 1995 Burgess cab from another site. price 25 bones ish. Wow what a little age can do! Talk about Qpr!!!! After a 2006 Molly Dooker Gigglepot, talk about well rounded as opposed to rip your face off fruit bomb(which I like on ocassion). Plus the burgess is only 13% alcohol… Wow the good old days lol
Just imagine if this was offered over a weekend, we’d prob hit another 300 “very critical” comments. Which may be justified. Thankfully we only have 24 hours of this one.
QOTD: If you could pick a wine to be listed next as the cindy wine, what wine would it be?
Pazz-over.
Haven’t tried this vintage, but the 2003 was terrific. While I’ve never seen a vintage chart for Israel, 2004 is considered a good, not great year, while 2003 is considered a great year. (2008, they say, is legendary, after a mediocre 2006 and 2007.)
Hey Gary how about a nice Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon from CA
@bluffan This wouldn’t be a wine for Passover since it’s not Mevushal. Although some Jews are more strict than others, my family only drinks Mevushal.
Oh am I so happy to see some WS bashing going on here finally!! They have NEVER had any street cred and Shanken is just a “book man,” a magazine publisher whose primary priority is to make money $$$$$$.
Parker is just about the only rater I pay attention to.
@WineKnurd – I would prefer to believe that they had Chateau Musar at the last supper. Close enough geographically, no?
Thank you CW for an easy PAAAZZ tonight.
Wow. Talk about a PAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
Man this could have been at the last supper. You can’t pazz on that unless you are a dirty commie!
Disclaimer: no offense to the communists or those who are dirty. But a dirty commie, that’s just not right…
Unless you’re planning on saving this for Passover, this is definitely a pazzzzzzzzzzz.
Granted, I haven’t had many Israeli wines, but nothing I’ve tried so far from this country has impressed me, and unless it’s backed up by a good review from a credible source I’m not willing to drop $25. If I wanted “smoky wood” and “Mediterranean herbs” for the same amount of money, I’d go for a Vacqueyras or an Aglianico.
I ignore WS. They ‘sell’ their ratings. Ditto with their sister publication, Cigar Aficionado. “Your wine/cigar just got an ’87′. With your new marketing campaign in our magazine, we can bump that to an ’89′…
Not Mevushal, gotta pazzzz.
@BrunelloBob,
No, it is West Bank! Sorry, can’t pass this one up.
Shalom! Will have to think about this one
Points schmoints. The Wine Spectator rating system is crass and often off-base. The more I ignore it, the more I discover truly unique, interesting, and enjoyable wines.
hmm…looks interesting. but yea, $25
yawn…are you kidding me?
Now THAT’S Variety!
Anyone EVER seen a vintage chart for Israel?
Is this Left Bank or Right?
but wait guys, didnt you see daniel rogov gave it 91 pts! sign me up for 4 cases!
It’s hard to follow up the last offer. Can’t wait for Friday’s Napa deal.
Errr, 85pts Spectator for 25 bones. I’m all about trying new things but this is an extraordinarily easy pass.
And I waited 30 mins for this?!?
Oy Vei!
