"The 2003 Barolo Monprivato is made in an atypically big, powerful style loaded with ripe fruit supported by plenty of structure. It boasts an enticing palate presence and a uniquely intense personality. The classic Monprivato notes of ripe cherries, roses, minerals, flowers and herbs are present, but they don't have the clarity and precision of the finest vintages. In 2003 Mascarello was more severe than normal in his green harvesting of the vineyard as he wanted to lighten the load on his plants to reduce their stress. He was also helped considerably by the compact, moisture-retentive soils. Readers who prefer more classically-styled versions of Monprivato may want to revisit the 1999 and 2001 although Mascarello told me he prefers the 2003 to the 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2023." -93 points- Antonio Galloni- Wine Advocate

"Medium red. Quite closed on the nose a month after the bottling, hinting at strawberry, mocha and musky underbrush. Then big, rich and expansive in the mouth, with a distinctly fatter texture than the 2004 if less complexity. A broad, dry wine that's huge for a Barolo from this address. Intriguing fungal nuance. Finishes with a perfumed character, but ultimately less high-pitched than usual for this superb bottling, with a narrower range of aromas. " -91 points- Stephen Tanzer- International Wine Cellar

"The Mauro Mascarello family MONPRIVATO vineyard is located in the village of Castiglione Falletto, and is a classic prime medium-hillside site stretching over six hectares (15 acres) at 280 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Barolo wine-growing area. It is historic vineyard, as is confirmed by old land registry archives dating back to 1666."

"Harvested around the middle of October. Estate-grown bunches thinned during the summer undergo traditional-style, floating cap fermentation for 20/25 days. The wine is then matured in medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels for around 38 months. The color is garnet red with orange-coloured highlights. The nose is complex, very fruity, elegant, intense, spicy, with flowery sensations. On the palate, this wine has excellent body with power and stuffing, demanding, masculine, long and full. Aging potentional: 15/25 years." -Winery

    Can I complain?
I’ve bought three times, three bottles each from Cindy and not so impressed with the wines. First was the Hungarian dessert wine from a long time ago. 1993 Tokaji Aszu. Way past it’s prime, or just not very good. I Still have 2 and a half bottles. Next is the 2001 Tenementi Barolo, which should be at a good stage in it’s life, but seems rough and not ready to drink. I still have 2 bottles.
The one I finally got yesterday is the Elias Mora Toro. It is pretty damn good but even 34 bones is stretching it. This time you sent three bottles in a 6 pack. Way too much Styrofoam! I hope you just ran out of three packs and blah blah. Good wine does not last long at my place and these are just sitting here wishing blah blah.
Sorry to be a grumpy old fart, but not gonna buy for a while. Get rid of the styrofoam please! I’d love to try the latest Barolo to expand my blah blah but ssssschnottt.
Also, can you give us a zoom in option on the label?

  2. Kittysafe

Thought I was passing, the lady of the house had other ideas, and we’re in for two. Funny, pretty much the opposite of what I’m reading in the comments!

  3. WineEcon

Excellent price for this wine. Price reflects impact of demand AND SUPPLY so correlation of price with value is highly variable.

    Gambero Rosso 2009 offers this…Barolo vintages: 1999–5; 2000–4; 2001–5; 2002–1; 2003–3; 2004–5; 2005–4; 2006–5. This wine gets 2 Glasses out of 3 “with a bullet” (p. 115).

Fun, and reassuring, to see how many Commentators refer to the challenge of servicing their “habit” while living “in relationship” (partners, spouses…nay, wives?). We guys should start a club.

Thanks to cgatesman for the help. Now that we know how to retrieve it, I won’t repeat my comment from 2-3 nights ago about the unreliability of points (or Glasses or stars, etc.), but see last Saturday’s WSJ and the article about points and the research of Robert Hodgson (owner of Fieldbrook Winery, Humboldt Co. CA, former prof).

  4. CZ

Okay I love barolos but was sitting on this for a LONG time (budget, etc) … and then the ‘Running Out’ message popped up and I that pushed me over the edge. This site is evil.

  5. Dr.J

cw,any barolo at this level at this discount is a no brainer. grazie.

  6. oenophile

So far I’ve dropped about $315 on 4 Cindy orders, reading through the posts it looks like I’m on the low end.

  7. JBoz

Cindy, you little temptress – you are a naughty girl tonight…strutting your fine stuff, catching when I’m at my most vulnerable and then coldly taking my $100. I feel dirty and ashamed. I think I love you.

  8. NY Pete

in for 3 … damn you cindy

  9. geoff

I LOVE Cindy … can’t purchase every night — as much as I’d like to — but tonight I jumped on 2 bottles. Nice!

  10. flyerfan

I was hoping to be able to resist this evening, but my resolve is waning……as is my checking account…..But who in their right minds can forego this great deal? Haven’t pulled the trigger just yet, but I’m afraid Cindy’s got my number and is snickering over in the corner just waiting for me to fold……It’s just not fair!!!!

  11. Uncle Albert

Calicab don’t feel badly about folding, we all fold and what a great reason to fold. This is a value-fold. Be happy, be well, and drink this nector with loved ones. ENJOY.

You have to know by now that Cindy has us all under her spell, no use fighting it.

  12. njAndrew

I am in with D-Rod. If this is available in the morning I will be tempted to get another one for long term aging. Although my wife bought 3 last night so she can’t kill me, I will just be eating beans and rice for a few weeks.

  13. PhilCT

A day or three of two-buck-chucks would be very much appricated.. For the love of god save us from our wives already!!!

  14. D-Rod

If this is still available in the morning, I may be driven to go for more. Please, do your part so that I won’t be kicked out of the apartment by next week!

  15. Calicab

    I folded.

  16. JeffU

OMG – I am so broke and I have to get 3 for the break on shipping! So much for a SIWBM – that lasted about 2 hours.

  17. Calicab

AAAARGH!!! After a day in Paso Robles and a day in Sonoma planned for tomorrow, can I really drop $100 on cindy wine right now? DILEMMAS!

  18. njAndrew

I think that I am going to need a second job (or a better paying first). Anyone hiring?

In for 1 (and maybe another one in the am if still available)

  19. Uncle Albert

WL is just fantastic, with these great offers, and attention to detail, their courtesy and wealth of knowledge at the store. I can not be more sincere as I say WL is the greatest thing that happened to wine lovers/nuts in a long while. To say that tonight’s offering is terrific would be an understatement, an old world, craftfully produced Barolo for this price is simply mind boggling, I’m in.

  20. Rick

Great deal – keep it up!

  21. Roger

I gave in. I have yet to try the ’03 barolo due to ratings but these price and winery seemed like a great deal. The 2001/2004 have been superb yet the ’04 are still young. Cannot wait to try the ’03 – 1 bottle now and 1 to age 5+ yrs.

  22. MR Kite

Can one say NO to a 91-93 point Barolo at this price? I think not, just got a 6 pack of Virna 03 and now this comes along, Cindy you’re killing me but oh how sweet a death. I read words like BIG, POWERFUL, RICH, BROAD, EXPANSIVE to which my response is YUM, I’ll take 3. Happy drinking.
P.S. Just got my Elias Mora, had it with a Middle Eastern style Lamb Stew, My goodness gracious unless you’ve had i,t you have no idea what a great wine this is.

  23. PhilCT

In for 1… How can inif when isaud over and over I’m only buying put sways until the first of December.. The fed-ex guy must think I’ve got a massive drinking problem!!!

  24. bob c

I have a new mistress and her name is Cindy….

  25. late-start

    damn you cindy…

  26. D-Rod

P.S. eBob (WA) scores for Piedmont Barolo vintages:

    2008: 93T
    2007: 92E
    2006: 93T
    2005: 93T
    2004: 96T
    2003: 90I
    2002: 76I

  27. D-Rod

I was thinking about it earlier today, and I have literally never been disappointed by any of my many Cindy purchases. That, and I can honestly say that WL has some of the best customer service I’ve honestly ever experienced. I bitched and moaned about the misleading “median score of 92″ on yesterday’s wine, and Kristen personally e-mailed me. If that’s not attention to detail I don’t know what is. I’m in for 1 despite the fact that my girlfriend may kick me out of the apartment soon after.

Oh, and I had a bottle of the St. Joseph tonight and it was great. Barnyard meets cassis and cinnamon with great structure and nice concentration. 91pts is right on the money, and you can’t go wrong at under 17 bones. Keep up the great work, WL.

  29. BSal

I keep saying I’m not going to buy tonight. And than you guys throw another fantastic wine at an unbelievable price at us. I haven’t missed too many opportunities, and tonight will be no different. Not sure if I should say thanks or send you my credit card bill. I guess for now its thanks. :)

  30. cgatesman

    I caved!

  31. Nathan L

You are killing me Cindy!!!! I made a commitment to not buy wine for 2 weeks and you made me break it. I don’t really think I had a choice with this one

  32. Brooklyn Paul

    joeg says buy!

    so I did

  33. carnyc

…offer on Cinderella since the Mesorio IMO. This is an old school producer of Barolo. This will be very ageworthy, but should also drink fairly well now because the weather in ’03 was super hot and the fruit was very ripe. This price is ridonkulous for this producer. Must resist…….!

  34. Edward Salonia

Sorry for the multiple posts, but, Barolo = Yum.

  35. Edward Salonia

cgatesman: It’s not a bug, it’s wordpress. The offers are only good until the next offer comes out anyway, so I don’t see the harm in looking back at past offerings. Now if we could see future posts, that may be an issue.

  36. cgatesman

Nice, Edward, that works even better!

  37. cgatesman

Well, until they patch up this buggy hole…

  38. Jack O'

    To njAndrew:

I am a big fan of Silvio Grasso and have had his 2003 Barolo wines and absolutely loved them. Don’t know what the vintage rating was for the region though. Hope this helps. Plus AG is the man!

  39. Edward Salonia

Jack O’: append /page/N/ to the end of the site. Each day is on a different page.

  40. Jack O'

Can’t say no to Italian reds; thanks again WL. Another suggestion for CW: Maybe you guys could do a link page that shows or lists the previously offered wines so those of us who miss a night can see what the wine was. And hopefully people will only write constructive comments this evening!

    Cheers!

  41. carnyc

Boom! Paid around $70 for this at an LWS in NYC. This is a great deal! and #1

  42. Tooch
  43. Jeffs

Haven’t been tempted lately. That apparently has ended. In for two.

  44. El Bigote

@mike El es uno del most importante barolos en Italy.

  45. Pary Bennett

hmmm, this guy looks pretty interesting. Sounds a bit funky in the write up, which is right up my alley.

  46. njAndrew

Yum, Piedmont, but 2003. Lets her from some of you with knowledge.

  47. El Bigote

    That es more like it!

  48. BuffaloLou

Never tried (sorry, I’m not that sophisticated!) a Barolo, so this is a tad too pricey for a first time! Thank YOU for the offer! Loving the (far too many) wines I’ve purchased so far!

  49. Chris Maloy

    Got mine.

  50. mike

Anyone had this one or know of it?
