Description:
90 Points Ultimate Wine Challenge 2016:
"Excellent, Highly Recommended. Stunning nose of crushed violet petals, cinnamon stick, barbecued meats, cassis, boysenberry, sage, and cedar. Rich and chocolatey on the palate with blackberry compote, vanilla, and brown sugar. Finishes strong with loads of fruit and dark chocolate."
Scotto Family Zinfandel is one of our top value Zinfandels in the shop.
The estate is run by three brothers and their sister, fifth generation winemakers tracing their family history back to Italy. Their goal is the same as their fatherâs, and their grandfatherâs and their great-grandfatherâs, and itâs not to earn awards (though this wine has) and itâs not to make bank (because more people lose fortunes than make them in the wine industry). Their goal is to make food-friendly, well-balanced wines.
In that, they have succeeded. This juicy Zinfandel spends two years in used French oak barrels, taking on richness, subtle vanilla notes and sweet spices. The tannins soften, and the fruit stays bright. Often, we hear critics, consumers and wine writers decry high alcohol levels of Zinfandel. While it may be true that some Zins earn a five blowtorch score on the ABV scale, not so with Scotto Family. The grapes are picked at a level of ripeness that balances fruit and flavor with reasonable potential alcohol. You wonât fall out of your chair⦠though the beauty of this bottle might just blow you away.
The best part: the wine is affordable.
