"Dark berry, grilled herb and underbrush aromas float out of the glass along with a whiff of rose. The firm palate offers juicy dark cherry, raspberry, clove, anise and tobacco framed in velvety tannins. -KO" |
Description:
Barbaresco is among Italy's great reds, an elegant expression of Nebbiolo, the queenly counterpart to Barolo as king. Usually you're looking at $40 or more per bottle, putting Barbaresco out of reach for everyday enjoyment.
Today however, this premiere Italian red is back in the game for family gatherings and quiet dinners at home.
This wine earned an incredible 90 points and an amazing review.
Wine Enthusiast's Italian editor Kerin O'Keefe knows a thing or two about Piedmontese reds. She wrote the book on it. Literally. It's called Barolo and Barbaresco: The King and Queen of Italian Wine. Today's special offer surely deserves a crown. The La Casa In Collina Barbaresco 2012 is Nebbiolo all done up - elegant, lithe, and showing the feminine side of a variety that can range from brawny and masculine to this silkier style.
O'Keefe also describes the 2012 Barbarescos overall as being "well-balanced wines with juicy fruit and refined tannins" in her September Wine Enthusiast article "The Beauty of Barbaresco." A fitting title. (Please note, this wine, reviewed in 2015, was not included in O'Keefe's 2016 piece.) The 2012 vintage, as a whole, earned 93 points from the Wine Enthusiast.
Comparing our notes to O'Keefe's, we pick up on red berries, slightly tart on the palate and turning sweeter on the long finish. Her notes of tobacco border on our sweet leather. We enjoy floral notes on the nose - roses are characteristic aromatics of nebbiolo - in addition to dark berry and savory aromas noted by O'Keefe. The tannins, as she notes, are indeed "velvety," smooth enough to enjoy now, and leaving a fine dustiness that would work well with the fats and proteins in your dinner's main course.
Made in a softer style, this Barbaresco is a beautiful bottle for family gatherings and for gifts. It will impress everyone from the traditional Barbaresco lover to the Oregon Pinot Noir lover.
Hands down, this wine is a head-turning beauty.
