"Vignamaggio has done a fabulous job with their 2010 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Riserva di Monna Lisa, a wine that captures the pedigree of this great Tuscan vintage. Rich and beautifully layered, yet light on its feet, the 2010 captivates all the senses with its striking perfume, gorgeous fruit and impeccable tannins. Dark red cherries, licorice, savory herbs, cloves and new leather resonate on the warm, expressive finish. The addition of 10% each Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon has given the Monna Lisa additional depth and complexity, but it is still the Sangiovese that is front and center. Drink 2014 - 2025." August 2013. |
91 Pts Wine Enthusiast |
"Sleek and structured, this offers aromas of blue flower, pressed powder, perfumed berry and leather. The bright palate delivers juicy black cherry, cinnamon, licorice and tobacco, with firm, polished tannins. It's already tempting but hold for complexity. Drink through 2020." July 2015 |
91 Pts Wine Spectator |
"The mix of black currant, cherry, plum and tobacco flavors picks up a loamy accent as this unfolds on the palate. Firm and balanced, with a long, savory finish. Drink now through 2020. 3,250 cases made." February 2014 |
Description:
Vignamaggio is traditionally the birthplace of Monna Lisa Gherardini, the "Gioconda" painted by Leonardo da Vinci. This wine is dedicated to this noblewoman in his portrait.
THE WINE
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is only produced in the best vintage years, with grapes from the farmâs prime south west grape growing areas. It is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the first ten days of October, the grapes destined for this wine are carefully sorted, first in the vineyard and then on sorting belts in the cellar. The juice remains on the skins for 16-18 days after which racking takes place. Once malolactic fermentation has occurred, the wine is aged, first in small French oak barrels for 18-20 months and then in larger barrels. The minimum aging period is 30 months, at least 3 of which are in the bottle. ~ Winery
