91 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media |
"Brilliant red. Vibrant red berry and floral pastille aromas and a bright mineral overtone. Fresh and focused on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that put on weight with aeration. Shows very good depth as well as vivacity, and finishes nervy and long, displaying silky tannins and an echo of sappy red fruit. |
Description:
There are three reasons (if not more) to act quickly on this deal:
1. 2014: A Dream Vintage
Josha Raynolds's words, not ours.
The 2014 growing season in Beaujolais was cool, yielding wines with especially lively acidity. The 2014s are traditionally styled wines. Think fresh, vivacious, lively. Think intense red fruit. Focus! No really, these are focused wines that display all of Gamay's greatness in Beaujolais (where over half of the world's acreage of this grape is located).
2. The Cru: Small and Rare
In her Wine Folly article The Secret to Finding Good Beaujolais, wine educator Hilarie Rumball Larson writes of Chenas, "The smallest and rarest of the Crus..." Chenas is situated between Julienas and Saint Amour to the north and Moulin-a-Vent to the south. Like its neighbors, Chenas wines tend to be powerful, intense and age-worthy.
3. The Producer
Though the vintage is out of the winemaker's control, and the terroir to some extent, too, it takes an expert to tie these factors together and usher to bottle a gorgeous wine like this one. Yohan Lardy is no stranger to winemaking. He is a native of Fleurie, another Beaujolais Cru, and the son of Beaujolais producer Lucien Lardy. Yohann established his eponymous label just a few years ago at age 27. In a short time, he has risen like cream to the top.
Bonus reason to get you in gear: We only have 6 cases of this wine. Then, that's it. It's the end of a vintage, my friends.
