94 Pts Wine & Spirits

"The Vivera family hails from Sicily - Palermo and Ragusa - but they didn’t move to Etna until 2002. They planted a vineyard on the northeastern face of the mountain a year later, and farm their vines organically. This is the second vintage in a row in which their carricante has earned an exceptional rating. This 2011 is golden in color and closed at first, hidden within a leesy, earthy cocoon. It emerges with air, bringing scents of orange blossoms and smoky minerality. The mild abrasion of earthy acidity seems to amplify the fleshy texture of the fruit, without the wine ever tasting fruity. A wine of the earth for any frutti di mare."

91 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous

"Good straw-yellow. Scented aromas and flavors of white flowers, apricot and vanilla, with a strong underlying mineral nuance. Then juicy, clean and perfumed, with a strong spine of acidity and tannins keeping the wine's underlying sweetness in check. Finishes with repeating floral notes and terrific length. Made from organic grapes, this is a very impressive wine." Reviewed March 2014

90 Pts Wine Enthusiast

"Structured and elegant, this opens with aromas of yellow flower, acacia, Mediterranean herb and just a slight whiff of petrol. The palate delivers mature green apple, citrus, mineral, oregano and aniseed balanced by bright acidity." Reviewed April 2015.

Description:

"The Vivera family planted their carricante vines on the northeastern side of Mt. Etna in 2003. Salisire is made with 100% Carricante grapes, grown organically on volcanic soils at approx. 600mt above sea level.

The name 'Salisire' is a combination on two words 'Sali' (Uphill) and 'Sire' (Sir) as this wine is dedicated to dad Antonino to remember all his efforts in planting this vineyard, the hard work and dedication to create this unique wine.

'Salisire' is a straw-yellow color with light greenish reflections. Floral with scents of pineapple and citrus pith. It seems broad and salty with minerals when first poured, gaining focus with air to become mouthwatering and deliciously cool. Pairs well with oysters and shellfish fried fish, and vegetables."

About the Estate
"In 2002, the Vivera family finally realized their dream to purchase an estate in the Martinella district of Mount Etna, on the North Eastern side of the volcano, and build a winery there. The Viveras are a classic example of “all things Sicilian,” with mother Armida coming from Corleone in Palermo, father Antonino hailing from Chiaramonte Gulfi in Ragusa, and their three children, Omar, Eugenio, and Loredana born and raised in Catania. The whole family is involved in the winery.

The estate has 45 hectares of vineyards and olive groves divided on three properties: 12 hectares in Martinella at 550-600 meters above sea level are planted to native grape varieties of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante, all organically grown. Etna’s mountain climate with large temperature differences between day and night, along with its volcanic soil, assist the Vivera family in creating their unique and elegant Etna wines.

The other wines include grapes sourced from the family’s other property in Corleone, 27 hectares planted to both international varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay) and local varietals such as Nero d'Avola, Catarratto and Insolia. A third property in Chiaramonte Gulfi near Ragusa is dedicated solely to the production of extra-vergin olive oil." Importer's Notes
