"Christian Seeley and António Agrellos of Quinta do Noval (see above) are also involved in a rather ornate wine and hospitality project just upriver at Romaneira. While the ambitious hotel closed after the economic crash and has yet to reopen, the vineyard and winery are putting out some astonishing wines. Agrellos blended this 2009 from tourigas nacional and franca, with a little roriz and tinto cão. I could just say it smells great and stop there. But Iâd be leaving out the sense of quiet elegance that layers the wine in perfectly ripe cherry flavor and a cushion of tannins. It seems to create an architectural space in the mouth, framing the steep Douro canyon into a lasting flavor." Reviewed April 2014 |

"From a great year in the Douro, this is a complex, impressive wine. It has elegance rather than brute power, pushed forward by smooth yet dry tannins and ripe black fruits. A touch of spice, balanced acidity and a great potential for aging. Drink from 2016." Reviewed October 2013 |

"The 2009 Tinto, the estate wine just labeled as "Quinta da Romaneira," was aged for 14 months in second year French barriques. It is a 60/30 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, with equal portions of Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão filling out the blend. I've tracked this periodically over the years. It has never turned into anything particularly dramatic, but it has consistently improved and integrated parts to a point where it is a complete pleasure to drink, smooth and flavorful. While my early projections in terms of score were pretty much where I want them to be, it is still worth noting how delicious this is at the moment and how graceful. In this big, big vintage, this is curiously restrained. That makes it actually drinkable. It still has the wherewithal to tighten a bit with air." Reviewed March 2016 |
Description:
Named one of Wine & Spirits top 100 Wineries in 2014, the Port house Quinta da Romaneira produces stellar dry reds from the Douro.
The critics are in agreement: this red is bold yet elegant, restrained and absolutely pleasurable.
With gorgeous riverfront property, Quinta da Romaneira's red grape vineyards overlook the Douro. Here, terraced vineyards run alongside the river and its tributaries. This is one of those regions that, if it had to be created all over again, farmers would probably pick up and walk away. The Douro is a tough place to farm - the soils are so rocky they have to be broken up mechanically. The cultural history of this region is as rich as the wines, and so it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Quinta da Romaneira, a Port house that is part of that rich history, was acquired by passionate investors in 2004 and is focused on producing dry wines, in additional to traditional fortified Port. Many members of the Romaneira team, including the managing director and winemaker, have previous experience at another esteemed Douro estate, Quinta do Noval.
This red blend is predominantly Tourigas Nacional and Franca, with the former building a wine of structure and the latter adding gorgeous aromatics. This wine is refined, offering dark fruits that are ripe but restrained. This wine is beginning to show beautifully, the tannins having smoothed out a bit, and still has a lifetime of evolution ahead of it.
