90 Pts Luca Maroni - Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani

Consistency: 32 - Balance: 29 - Integrity: 29
"A rare offering for its vivid purple color, softness, roundness and gratification. Its first quality is its appearance: dark and dense ruby, so thick that the light cannot shine through if not just enough to offer vivid purple highlights. The second quality is its velvety touch both on the nose and on the palate: both senses harmoniously balanced. Its appeal and the richness of its fruit are amplified by its freshness. An extremely pleasing wine resulting from grape growing and winemaking of great caliber."

88 Pts Ian Dagata - Vinous Media

"Deep ruby. Inky, flinty aromas of red berries and herbal dark plum. Enters the mouth juicy and sweet, then turns slightly lean and medicinal on the back half. Finishes fresh and moderately persistent." Drinking window: 2015 - 2018. April 2015.

At 120 years and counting (estate bottling began here roughly 40 years ago), this estate is one of Abruzzo’s finest, renowned for its powerful wines. Originally known as Fattoria Nicò (from the founder’s name, Niccolò Illuminati), Illuminati now owns 130 hectares of vines and produces a million bottles of wine annually. Stefano, Lorenzo and Anna Illuminati are following in the footsteps of father Dino and are currently making some of the best wines in the estate’s history.

Description:

A very powerful color, black and cherry red; attractive and promising color strength.

The typical expression with a fresh nose of leather notes, undergrowth and black currant. Discreet, yet fresh and solid wood steam in the background.

With a fine taste and fused starter, this tends to have a velvety texture with a particularly pleasant tactile mouth contact. Harmonious, juicy matter with a good mouth volume and a tempting fruit intensity. Alcohol is full-fused, the tannins are soft and tasty allowing the prolongation of the fun is not hampered and the finale has an attractive length. Prima!

The sloping vineyards are located within the municipality of Controguerra at an altitude of 260 meters. Light clayey, relatively poor soil. Typical planting of 1,100 plants per hectare, of which the fruit branches in height with each cross connect (Treillis system).

The grapes are harvested in early October stemmed and crushed. There follows a long soaking process in combination with a controlled fermentation in stainless steel with a maximum temperature of 28 degrees. After the apple lactic acid fermentation, the wine moves to casks of Slavonian oak (25 hl) for a maturity of 7 to 8 months.

"A joyous, fruit-driven red with juicy dark cherries, flowers and spices that seem to jump from the glass. The palate is deep, full, round, and well-balanced with a lingering hint of licorice on the finish. Pairs well with roasted red meats, braised meats, game, poultry, medium-aged cheeses, and it is ideal with lamb. A perfect everyday red wine and always a crowd favorite!" - Importer

Winery:
"In 1890, Mr. Nicola Illuminati founded his own wine company, run as a small scale production center to ensure the authenticity of the wine produced. This craftsman-type production system was inherited by Nicola's grandson, Dino, who has been leading the family company since the 1950s.

In more than 120 years of company’s history the Illuminati vineyards have grown from 15 to 130 hectares in size in Controguerra, a special wine-producing area between the Gran Sasso mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Dino has been a long-standing icon and advocate for this unique piece of land and was the driving force behind the DOC recognition of this part of Abruzzo for which he was knighted as 'Cavaliere del Lavoro' by the Italian President for his contribution to the business sector and for ‘combining ancient practices with innovative techniques'. The Colline Teramane appellation is now the only DOCG in Abruzzo.

The Illuminati family represent all that is great about modern winemaking, with their innate understanding and possession of some remarkable vineyard sites, a respect for tradition and family that dates back to the winery’s inception in 1890 and a totally up-to-the-minute technological bent which sees their winemaking facilites equipped to best practise standards. Quality, not quantity drives Dino Illuminati and his family adn their wines are characterful, impressive and fiercely individualistic. The focus is on Montepulciano, the king-grape of central Italy, made in traditional fashion and offered in excellent, drinkable mealtime bottlings to more nuanced, muscular vineyard selections, most offering terrific value for the money. Little has changed at the winery except that Cavaliere now works with the family younger generations." - Importer
