96 Pts Wine & Spirits

"Peter Jakob Kühn is the eleventh generation of his family to make wine, farming nearly 50 acres in and around Oestrich; today he works with his son, Peter Bernhard, who has helped the family convert the vineyards to biodynamics. This wine comes from two vineyards in Oestrich Doosberg, both marked by the quartzite veins in the loess and clay-loam soils. It shines in the glass, seeming to emanate more energy than normal for a mere liquid; one sniff is equally tempting, the scent a direct line to a field of warm stone, dried grasses and wildflowers. The flavors feel pristine, perfectly ripe and preserved, even as they offer a sense of warmth and generosity in their slight caramel edge; the acidity feels alive, unobtrusive yet vital. It ends with a saline note that's so mouthwatering, it's hard to put the glass down. For a mushroom risotto, or anything umami." Reviewed December 2015

Description:

"The two vineyards we harvest for Landgeflecht belong to the vineyardsite of Oestrich Doosberg. Our ancestors knew very early from the special quality of these vineyards, so that they braided loppings from a pasturage to fence them. So the vineyards were protected of game and burglary. The vineyards comprise slight southern leaned slopes. The soil is made up of a mixture of loessially and clayey loam which is nerved by grey Quartzite. The gravels date from the past (about 60 million years ago) when at that time the riverbed of the Rhine has had a huge extenison up to an elevation of 120 meter above sea level. The supplies of water is perfect. The roots of the vines don't suffer from drought and supply the grapes with enough water." - Winemaker's Notes

About the Producer
Founded in 1786 by Jacobus Kühn, the Kühn estate remains a family operated winery currently run by 11th generation winemakers - Peter Jakob, his wife Angela, and their son Peter Bernhard. Peter Jakob and Angela Kühn are passionate grape-growers at heart. The entirety of their efforts is in the pursuit of exploring the potential of, and finding the purest possible expression of their grapes. Peter Bernhard graduated from the prestigious Geisenheim University after stages in Burgundy and Alsace (at Zind-Humbrecht) and has been working in the estate's cellars ever since. Having studied thoroughly both the philosophical aspects of biodynamicism and the science of both grape growing and winemaking, Peter Junior lends a fantastic perspective and represents the next generation of Kühn family winemaking.

The Kühn family history is intrinsically woven into their land. For over 200 years the Kühns have meticulously maintained their vineyards and developed a deep appreciation of their land. The decision to embrace biodynamic principles was borne of this relationship and an earnest desire to produce vibrant, expressive wines that did justice to the terroir on which their family has farmed for 10 generations. As the first (and still the only) biodynamic producer in the Rheingau, the Kühns have fully embraced every aspect of the preparation, the application and the philosophy of biodynamic farming and have quickly become icons for profound Riesling and natural, organic wines.- Distributor's Notes
