92 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media |
"(96% tempranillo, 3% garnacha and 1% viura). Bright ruby. Seductively perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, cherry-cola, incense and Asian spices. Juicy, energetic red and dark berry flavors possess serious power but carry no excess fat and show no rough edges. Finishes spicy and very long, echoing the dark berry notes. This is already delicious." (10/11) |
90 Pts Jay Miller - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
"The entry-level wine, the 2008 Predicador, is made up of 96% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha and Viura aged for 16 months in second use French oak. Fragrant notes of smoke, spice box, incense, tobacco, and assorted red and black fruits inform the nose of this relatively forward, savory, well-proportioned, lengthy effort. It has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years and will provide optimum drinking from 2013 to 2020." |
Description:
"Predicador 2008 is a deep cherry-red color. On the nose red fruits and black fruits predominate, with spicy notes and soft oak, showing great complexity. The palate is pleasant and full-bodied, refreshing and full of fruit. Its balancing acidity and ripe tannins bring power and a long finish." -Importer
Winery:
"Benjamin Romeo was the winemaker at the iconic Rioja winery Artadi. After 15 years there, he started Contador, his own personal project, also in the Rioja Alavesa. There he very quickly received international recognition when his 2004 vintage Contador Cuvee was awarded 100 points from The Wine Advocate! The name, Predicador (meaning preacher) and the label are inspired by Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider - a film which Benjamin loves." -Importer
Winemaker:
"There is no doubt that Benjamin Romeo is a perfectionist when it comes to winemaking. He is both passionate in the bodega, and obsessive in the vineyard. He worked as winemaker at Artadi between 1985 and 2000, and now has his own small project where he makes limited quantities of high quality, limited production Rioja, called, Contador, Cuvea del Contador, and La Vina de Andres, named after his father Andres. He introduced Predicador ("Preacher"), an entry-level cuvee in 2006, after a clamoring market couldn't gain access to his wines. He has recently added a white, Predicador Blanco, to his portfolio.
Situated in and around San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Benjamin has 7 hectares, half devoted to La Vina de Andres, and the other half divided between 20 plots averaging 130 square feet with vines up to 100 years old. He also acquired several caves or grottos, dating back to the 12th and 16th centuries. One such grotto situated in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, is under the bell tower, which is depicted on the Contador's label.
The attention to detail of these wines is exemplified by the hand selection of grapes to personally traveling to Extremadura to select the individual cork trees for the corks, incidentally the same cork supply that is used by Chateau Petrus. During the grape ripening time of the year, Benjamin visits the vineyard daily, many of which are bordered by wild flowers and herbs. He feels the aromatics of the herbs have an influence on the wine grapes." - Importer
