92 Pts Mosel Fine Wines |
"Made from 100 year-old vines, this very elegant and fine wine offers telltale flavors of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with ripe yet fine flavors of grape, flower of apricot tree and yellow peach. The fruit is clearly of Auslese ripeness as more exotic notes (such as quince and pineapple) come through with airing. The lovely mouth-coating structure is full of sappy and juicy yellow fruits. This is a superb wine which will need some time to find its inner balance. 2022-2042" (10/13) |
92 Pts Wine Spectator |
"A fat and sassy Riesling, with long, full and rich flavors of smoked meat, dried peach and ruby grapefruit. The minerally finish features fresh spice notes. Drink now through 2040. 350 cases made. -KM" |
Description:
"The estate of Max Ferdinand Richter has been owned by the Richter family for more than 300 years. Today this enterprise, owned and run by winemaker Dirk Richter, is one of the leading producers of top Rieslings in the heart of the central Mosel area with total holdings of 43 acres and an annual production of about 10,500 cases."
"Richter not only produces fine wines that are well known throughout the world, such as Erdener Treppchen, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, and Brauneberger Juffer, but also two coveted top wines: Mulheimer Helenenkloster and Veldenzer Elisenberg. The possession of these vineyards dates back to 1813 when their ancestor, in an extreme demonstration of personal courage, succeeded in preventing the sacking of Mulheim by Napoleon. They produce a wide variety of wines from estate-grown grapes that reflect the individual style of each single vineyard. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally fresh weathering grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz), or clay soils (Graach, Erden, Wehlen, Mulheim), which determine character and flavour."
"The wines of Max Ferdinand Richter enjoy worldwide acclaim. They are ambassadors of the rich cultural heritage of the unique Mosel landscape." - Importer
Vineyard:
"The "Wehlener Sonnenuhr" ("Sun dial") vineyard produces very elegant, minerally and refined wines. The steep stony, dark grey slate vineyard is situated on the right hand river, and faces south-southwest. The sunshine naturally heats up the terroir extremely well and keeps the temperature ideally during the night. Rieslings from this vineyard are world wide known for their longevity and ageing potential. Vines are extremely old (up to 100 years) and uncrafted." - Importer
