"This is the best wine ever from Poggio Antico. Aromas of blackberries and flowers follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a polished tannin mouth-feel. This is really structured, yet elegant. Wonderful purity. Better in 2014, but who can wait?" (01/12) |
95 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous |
"The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is a gorgeous, sleek wine laced with dark red cherries, kirsch, menthol, pine and spices. Sweet floral notes wrap around the silky finish. The 2007 stands out for its finessed texture and impeccable overall balance. I can't remember a more polished, elegant vintage of Altero. Poggio Antico hit it out of the park. The 2007 spent 24 months in 500-liter French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027." (04/12) |
94 Pts Stephen Tanzer - Vinous Media |
"Good full red. Very pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, rose petal and spices, along with a suggestion of chocolate. Then almost surprisingly plush and sensual on the palate, and distinctly sweeter than the 2007 classico, showing a flavor of cherry liqueur. Extract-rich and dense in texture without betraying any heaviness. Finishes with excellent spine and thrust and good medicinal reserve. This will need time to absorb its serious dusting of tannins." (07/12) |
93 Pts Wine Enthusiast |
"Pretty ensemble of bright fruit, spice and cured meat, with ample concentration. Plump and round in the mouth, with loads of aromatic intensity. The mouthfeel is tight and chiseled. - ML" (05/12) |
91 Pts Wine Spectator |
"A tightly wound, cherry- and currant-laced red, with accents of mint, herbs and wild macchia. A powerful wine, with dense, dry tannins on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2027. 350 cases imported. -BS" (09/12) |
Description:
Wine/Winemaking:
"A modern style of Brunello, Altero is aged two years in 500 liter French oak tonneaux and two years in bottle before release. A beautiful effort, this wine offers quintessential notes of black cherry, violets, brambles and earth in a highly elegant and nuanced style." - Importer
Producer:
"The Poggio Antico estate is located three miles south of Montalcino, Tuscany and dates back to the early 19th century. The 50 acre property was purchased in 1984 by Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder and is currently managed by their youngest daughter Paola and her husband, the winemaker Alberto Montefiori. The estate vineyards were planted in the 1970s and are amongst the highest in Montalcino. The high altitude - approximately 1,500 feet - means a constant presence of cool maritime breezes. These cleansing winds not only prevent fog, frost and mildew, but also eliminate the need for sulfides or pesticides. The vineyards face south/southwest and are planted on a mix of Galestro and calcareous rock. The wines of Poggio Antico are made in a traditional manner to express the full characteristics of vintage, varietal and terroir." - Importer
