91 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A joint venture between Eric Solomon and proprietor Nuria Altes, this is an unreal value made from 100% Grenache from vines planted nearly 100 years ago. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a flowery perfume revealing aromas of forest floor, underbrush, sweet black cherries, raspberries and strawberries. Medium-bodied, ethereal as well as sublime, this finesse-styled Grenache possesses a delicacy that is difficult to believe for such intensity. Consume it over the next 3-4 years." (11/13)

90 Pts Jeb Dunnuck - The Rhone Report

"A concrete tank aged blend of 100% Garnatxa Negra, from vines planted between 1912 and 1915, the 2012 Herencia Altes Garnacha Negra Terra Alta exhibits a transparent ruby color as well as scrumptious, perfumed aromas of wild strawberries, kirsch liqueur, creamy licorice, and crushed rock like minerality on the nose. Gorgeously fresh and fragrant, with a beguiling, downright sexy profile that's hard to resist and a clean, dry finish, it is a crazy value that should impress for 3-4 years." (03/13)

Description:

Wine:
"Bright crimson in colour, this wine is very expressive with notes of red fruits and minerals that leap from the glass. Plenty of fruit on the palate, a touch of complexity and sweet tannins. Pairs well with grilled meats, cabrito and lamb." - Winery

Vineyard:
"The climate is Mediterranean with a marked continental influence bringing cold winters. The dominant winds are the "Cerc" a north westerly, and the "Garbi", a sea breeze. The soil type is sandy and clay with some calcareous content. We looked for a range of Garnatxa vines, some very old, others younger, to achieve complexity and balance. Of key importance was picking with a good level ripeness but avoiding excessive alcohol." - Winery

Winemaker:
"Herencia Altes is a project a long time in the making. For generations my family has been grape growers, with vineyards dispersed around the village of Batea. Now, I have decided to give these grapes their own personality in the form of these hand-crafted wines. While Terra Alta is not yet a well-known region - tucked away in the southeastern corner of Catalonia it borders Aragon and Valencia - it is one of the largest areas in Catalonia under vine. With plenty of old Garnatxa bush vines, I think it is amongst the best regions in terms of quality and authenticity."

"My home village is Batea. Built upon Roman and Moorish foundations it preserves a beautiful historical centre and its grand church is testament to its past glories. In terms of viticulture, it is the most important village in Terra Alta accounting for over 50% of its entire grape production. Most of the grapes are sold to cooperatives or large companies outside the region. Herencia Altes is my dream to put Terra Alta on the map and show the true quality of these wonderful old vines." - Nuria Altes
