Description:

This 2-pack includes 1 bottle of 2009 - Tolaini Al Passo Toscana Igt, and 1 bottle of 2008 - Tolaini Valdisanti.

2009 - Tolaini Al Passo Toscana Igt:
"Pier Luigi Tolaini and his team blend Sangiovese and Merlot to make the 2009 Al Passo. This is a ripe and delicate red that very successfully strives for that difficult equilibrium between power and elegance. Small berry fruit, moist earth and dried violets open the bouquet. The wine is defined by structure with a beautifully feminine and ethereal quality at the back. The two varieties compliment each other beautiful: The 85% Sangiovese gives the wine finesse and the 15% Merlot adds color and a touch of pulpy cherry. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2024." (08/13) - 93+ Pts Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wine:
"Spicy notes of French oak rise above distinct aromas of cherry and berry. The palate has a backbone of Sangiovese, a roundness of Merlot and enhanced body from the oak. The fruit purity and varietal signatures are testament to the meticulous care given to the young vines." - Importer

Winemaking:
"The most obvious accomplishment in fruit quality from this estate can be tasted in the fruit-forwardness of the estate's Sangiovese. This historically austere varietal is the pride of the winery. Pier luigi and his team have succeeded in developing this modernly fruity Sangiovese in addition to maintaining its noteworthy structured varietal character. The 12 hectares of Sangiovese are planted at 7,400 plants per ha, growing a select few bunches per plant. The grapes are further selected at harvest and the top grapes are destemmed and 50% are fermented in oak fermenters, 50% in stainless steel tanks. The wine undergoes malolactic and ages for 1 year, a portion in barrique but the majority is in tonneaux of 500 hl oak tanks before the wine is blended by Rolland and then bottled where it rests until we taste it and agree it is ready for market. The name of this wine comes from the passo found in the circular forest on the highest point of the Montebello vineyard. A maze where in antiquity hunters lured their prey and captured it in the "pass." From here there is a clear view of Siena, and the tower in Piazza del Campo can also be seen, which adds to the mystique of this passo." - Importer

This wine was also rated 88 Points by the Wine Spectator.

2008 - Tolaini Valdisanti:
"The 2008 Valdisanti impresses for its layered personality, something that was quite difficult to achieve in this vintage. Plums, black cherries, sage, incense and sweet tobacco are some of the many notes that are woven into a soft fabric of notable class. Floral notes add freshness and balance on the finish. Valdisanti is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018." (06/12) - 90 Pts Antonio Galloni - Vinous

"This rich red shows concentrated flavors of cherry, raspberry and spice, accented by tobacco and briar notes lingering pleasantly on the finish. The tannins are ripe and dense. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2023. 8,000 cases imported. - BS" (09/13) - 90 Pts Wine Spectator

"Ruby-red. Floral, highly perfumed aromas of cassis, violet and mint. Intensely flavored and penetrating, with very good volume to its black fruit, cedar and mint flavors. The long finish shows a mounting tannic quality and classic dryness." (09/12) - 90 Pts Ian Dagata - International Wine Cellar

"A balanced and fruity red with minerals and berries. Medium-to-full body, with fine tannins and a delicious finish. Drink now." (12/11) - 90 Pts James Suckling - JamesSuckling.com

Wine:
"Youthful, rich dark fruit, berry and cassis aromas meld with notable French oak spice. On the palate, Valdisanti is full-bodied with deep but reserved fruit flavors framed by rich oak. The excellent balance of fruit intensity with fine tannins indicates a cellar worthy wine." - Importer

Winemaking:
"The grapes for this blend come from the estate's 2 vineyards, Montebello and San Giovanni, which are only 4 kms apart. The grapes are manually harvested and then undergo a strict selection process; first as bunches and then once they are destemmed, the whole berries are transferred into French oak fermenters and a portion into stainless steel which undergoes temperature controlled fermentation. The wine is then raised for 16 months in barriques (70% new), of which 6 months are on the lees. The symbol on the label of the chalice and the serpent was taken from a 16th century painting in the church bordering the San Giovanni estate. Rutilio Manetti, a famous Tuscan artist, commemorated a story of 2 saints offering gifts to the Madonna. The House of Tolaini has named its wine after the Saints and for the symbolism of Manetti's painting: the fruit representing the richness of our soil and the serpent representing the passion of our labors." - Importer
