2009 - Zonte Footstep Baron Von Nemesis Shiraz
"Smooth and round, wrapped in a layer of fine tannins. The exotic flavors of cherry, guava, goji berry and tropical spices billow easily on the long finish. Best from 2014 through 2020. 100 cases imported." (05/12) - 92 Pts Wine Spectator
Wine:
"Barossa blood red - i.e. deep crimson with a purple hue. On the nose, super blackberries and pure unadulterated 99% Cocoa chocolate. Lifted blood plum and raspberries and some dark pepper and brambly spice smells. On the palate there are generous black fruits, like mulberries and boysenberries, a full and frank Shiraz start. Classic Barossa; generous, flavoursome and super sweet blackberry pie with dark, dry chocolate mouth feel. Sweet fruit then tightens up with fine fruit and oak tannin. Great flavour and composition. Sweet spice cuts through plus hints of jamminess. On the finish there is youthful austerity as you would expect from such a classic old school Shiraz, but there is also plenty of fineness to the tannin and dark chocolate nuances in the lengthy finish." - Winery
Producer:
"Zonte's Footstep is named after a 19th century Zante currant vineyard, as new plantings follow the original footstep. The currant business dried up, but Zonte's Footstep became our blueprint..."
"In 2003 we pooled old white utes and new-ish tractors to grow the best grapes from the best vineyards. All we want to do is taste our fruit in our wine, so we charged our reigning winemaker, Mr. Ben Riggs, with one goal; to make the best wines we can, true to vineyard and variety, so long as we make a bloody good drink!" - Winery
This was also scored 89 Points by the Australian Wine Companion, and 85 Points in the Wine Advocate.
2008 - Jacobs Creek Centenary Hill Shiraz :
"Firm in texture, generous and expressive in flavor, boasting dark berry and currant fruit that pushes against fine tannins, picking up a floral note as it lingers. Drink now through 2018. 2,500 cases imported." (06/12) - 90 Pts Wine Spectator
Wine:
"Full depth crimson red. A densely concentrated nose, showing regionally distinctive ripe black fruits and cocoa/dark chocolate, with clove/allspice highlights and cedar and deep vanilla oak in a supporting baritone role. Full-bodied yet softly structured the wine shows ripe berry fruit flavours that contribute to a richly textured mid-palate. Long in the mouth, with finely grained tannins and well integrated stylish oak characters, with restrained acidity closing out the long finish."
"In 1947, Fred Gramp planted a Moreton Bay fig tree to commemorate 100 years since his grandfather, Johann Gramp established the first commercial vineyard in the Barossa Valley along the banks of Jacob's Creek. The site was named Centenary Hill. This fine example of Barossa Shiraz is named after this location and today the Moreton Bay Fig still proudly overlooks Jacob's Creek. This wine has intense plum and spice aromas and flavours and is rich and full in the mouth with deliciously soft tannins. Fantastic with veal, duck, pork, lamb and meat casserole dishes, it also makes a good partner to cheeses at the end of a meal, particularly if the wine is bottle matured a few more years before opening.- Winery
2009 - Olson Ogden Syrah Unti Vineyard :
"Starting out with intense, highly concentrated aromas of spices and blackberries that are about as deeply filled as Syrah can get without going over the top, this beautifully balanced, very well-crafted wine shows its true colors once in the mouth and offers up long-lasting flavors that are keenly focused on precise Syrah fruit. Firm without being edgy, and, deserving at least three or four years in the cellar, this incredibly involving wine has all the signs of a bottling that will combine power with sophistication as the years go by." (07/12) - 96 Pts Connoisseurs Guide to Wine
"Opaque purple. Sexy, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes candied dark berries and violet, with smoky oak and Indian spice nuances building with air. Stains the palate with intense blackcurrant and mulberry flavors lifted by notes of cracked pepper and allspice. Shows impressive intensity on the finish, which repeats the violet and spice notes." (05/12) - 92 Pts Josh Raynolds - International Wine Cellar
"A gorgeous, brooding Syrah from Unti's wonderful Rhone-inspired vineyard. This wine has savory herbs intermingled with flavors of black cherry, leather and espresso - particularly on the finish. An integrated and complex rendering of California Syrah, with smooth tannins and a fullness that doesnât overwhelm." (08/12) - 90 Pts Wine Enthusiast
Wine:
"This wine has a wonderful nose of black cherry fruit, new leather, mocha/cocoa, spice and white pepper. A full-bodied yet elegant wine with excellent balance, great structure and firm but mature tannins. There are textured, complex layers of cherry and wild berry fruits with earth and minerals on the palate followed by a long, lingering finish. This wine will show its best in 3 to 7 years but try it when still young over several days and you will see how this wine will blossom with some time in the cellar." - Tim Olson, Winemaker
Vineyard:
"George Unti and his team, led by Vineyard Manager Levi Glen are committed to growing great grapes and their dedication shows in the quality of wines coming out of this great vineyard. They rely on traditional farming techniques while incorporating the latest technology and innovations. Their experimentation with new clones and high density planting continues to yield impressive results."
"After years of farming sustainably, in 2004 the Unti's began using biodynamic vineyard practices in order to make the vines more self-sustaining and adaptive to their natural environment. Having worked with the vineyard since 2001, we have noticed a shift in the wines' personality. The wines have taken on more minerality and show more depth and range in the core of fruit that defines the wines." - Winery
Producer:
"Olson Ogden Wines is a small, artisan wine company located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. We specialize in small production, handcrafted wines. Our focus is on Pinot Noir and Rhone varietals, with an emphasis on vineyard designated Syrah's. We seek out passionate growers with special vineyards."
"Our primary goal is to produce complex and intense wines that express the terroir and vintage from which they come. Our winemaking philosophy has its roots in traditional methods but is tempered by trial and error and creative innovation. Each wine produced is an expression of the appellation and/or vineyard it comes from. Our wines are usually bottled unfined and unfiltered and will likely contain a natural sediment during their evolution. This results in an authentic and honest wine that is rich and complex and a pleasure to drink." - Winery
