92+ Pts John Gilman - View from the Cellar

"The current release of Camille Saves Brut Rose is a blend of sixty percent chardonnay and forty percent pinot noir from the village of Bouzy, with twelve percent of this being still pinot noir incorporated into the cuvee. The wine does not undergo malo and was disgorged in January of 2011. The new release is a lovely wine, with a classic deep salmon color and offering up a superb bouquet of blood orange, fraises du bois, bread dough, a nice hint of cinnamon, a beautifully complex base of soil and citrus zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and snappy, with fine nascent complexity, lovey focus and balance, very classy, pinpoint bubbles and outstanding length and grip on the elegant and youthful finish. This is eminently drinkable today, but based on how well the 2008 release of this wine evolved in my cellar, it is pretty hard not to argue that this wine would be best tucked away for a few more years to allow its secondary layers of complexity to emerge. It is quite clear that Camille Saves is one of the finest sources for Brut Rose out there today. 2012-2030." (07/12)

Description:

Winery:
"This family-run estate in Bouzy is better known abroad than in France, as 70 percent of its production is exported, and a quarter of its production is sold in the United States. Eugene Saves began estate-bottling champagne in 1910, and was succeeded by his son Louis and grandson Camille. Today it’s Camille's son, Herve Saves, who is in charge of the estate. Saves owns six hectares in the grand cru of Bouzy, with the rest of his holdings in adjacent villages: two hectares in Ambonnay, one in Tours-sur-Marne and one in the 99-percent-rated premier cru of Tauxieres." -Peter Liem, ChampagneGuide.net

Wine:
"Saves's champagnes are deliciously expressive of the Bouzy terroir, with their rich, ample fruit and sleekly harmonious structures. The absence of malolactic enlivens the fruit flavors without feeling at all aggressive, adding to the sense of purity and harmony here. All of Saves's champagnes are pure Bouzy grand cru except for the non-vintage Carte Blanche, which is blended from his holdings in four different villages. For his rose, Saves doesn't use a non-vintage brut as a base, but creates a completely different cuvee, with chardonnay usually accounting for more than half of the blend." -Peter Liem, ChampagneGuide.net
