90 Pts Antonio Galloni - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Alois's 2004 Trebulanum is made from Casavecchia, an ancient variety native to the province of Caserta that has recently been re-discovered. This dense, mouthfilling wine is loaded with tons of character in its powerful expression of dark fruit, menthol, minerals and underbrush. It is a delicious red to enjoy now and over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014." 90 points - Antonio Galloni - Wine Advocate

VARIETY:

"The story of this wine is all in the grape variety. Casavecchia possibly comes from the ancient Roman variety known as Trebulano -a variety we know something about due to the writings of Pliny the Elder. Pliny didn't make it through Vesuvius' downfall and quite frankly neither did Casavechhia."

"The grape was long thought to be extinct when some producers were able to identify it from several cuttings found in - to be kind - lesser vineyards of the area. The growers there had in turn taken cuttings from a massive vine with a huge trunk that had some how survived the years and phylloxera to provide us with this unique variety. With the help of Luigi Veronelli and other top Italian oenologists, Trebulano was reborn as Casavecchia - Old House in Italian, homage to those who rescued the vine and inadvertently renamed it after where they found it growing. -AmalfiLife.com

ESTATE:

"The Alois family is one of the world's most famous makers of beautiful fabrics, with their silk adorning the walls of the Louvre and the White House. The perfection and passion that they have maintained for centuries in the textile industry has spilled over into their passion for wine."

"The vineyards that surround the estate were originally a small half hectare of land with only nine rows planted. Today those vineyards, planted together with the new additions of plants are grown with passion by Michele Alois." -Winery

WINEMAKER:

"Riccardo Cotarella was born into a prominent winemaking family in the town of Monterubiaglio near Orvieto on July 2, 1948. Following in his father’s footsteps, he received a degree in Oenology and Viticulture from Conegliano in 1968. Riccardo began applying his knowledge locally, and soon became known as the "Wizard of White Wine" for his ground-breaking work with native white varietals in Umbria, particularly Orvieto and Lazio. Riccardo’s expertise however was not limited to local white varietals, and he soon became known for his abilities with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese grape varietals, as well as his refined barrel fermentation techniques including oak aging of red and white wines in both large and small barrels."

"Today, Riccardo Cotarella is regarded as a pioneer in the Italian wine industry. His expertise spans every aspect of winemaking from soil types and irrigation techniques, to blending and fermentation, to international sales and marketing. He is largely responsible for the vast improvement in quality of numerous wines in central and southern Italy, and for bringing worldwide recognition to these regions as premium wine producing areas. Dr. Cotarella preaches a minimalist approach to winemaking in order to preserve the natural qualities of the grapes, thus he advocates minimal filtration and clarification especially for the reds. The result has been wines with increased body and varietal character." -Winemaker
