Description:

"This is a terrific negociant label from one of Gevrey's elite producers, Claude Dugat. This is a drinking great right now, but will continue to hold for several more years. The wine is defined by terrific structure and clean, pure berry fruit characteristics with the weight and acidity you would expect from a great producer. The nose is a herbal, with floral and underbrush qualities and little hints of smoked meat." -Importer

VINTAGE:
"The always understated Claude Dugat told me that 2004 is a "good millésime but not a great one. August was just too ugly with limited luminosity, hail and other various problems and while September was one of the finest ever, we just couldn't recoup all of the lost maturity. Thankfully, there was just enough phenolic maturity and better than expected sugars which were in the 12% range. I elected to do a 15 day cuvaison with twice daily punch downs but almost no pumping over. The malos were very long and the wines are interesting as they continue to put on weight but still, I don't believe they'll ever be genuinely great."

"That said, 2004 is very pinot with a certain underlying tension to the wines and I particularly like the elegance. There is a good base of acidity so the wines are very clean and energetic in the mouth yet it isn't aggressive. I don't believe there is another vintage that represents a really good parallel but if I had to choose one, it would be 2001." The present plan is to bottle at the usual time, which in Dugat's case is February. While I agree with Dugat that 2004 is not truly a great one at this domaine, it is clearly very fine and will give much pleasure over the medium term." -Allen Meadows - Bughound

DOMAINE:
"Without doubt in the top 10 producers in Burgundy, and one of the top 2 or 3 producers of Gevrey Chambertin. Claude knows every inch of his vineyards and it is this zeal and fanaticism that makes his wines so extraordinary. They are also made in tiny quantities with strictly limited availability and are quite expensive."

"With some of the oldest vines of any Domaine in Burgundy, some as old as 70 years old, it is with no surprise that Dugat yields as little as 18 hectolitres per hectare. Dugat's Pinot berries speak of terroir and deliver focused fruit flavors that can electrify, even shock, the palate with uncompromising purity. With no filtration, no fining and little intervention during vinification, it should come as no surprise that Dugat's Pinots are so highly prized for their clean and racy style." -Pinot File
