91 Pts Wine Spectator

"Coffee and chocolate notes from oak dominate this muscular red, but there's a solid core of plum fruit, and notes of mineral and tobacco add complexity. Impressive concentration for the vintage. Best from 2007 through 2015. 100 cases imported."-91 Points - Wine Spectator

"The 2002 Coleccion Jaime Rodriguez went through malolactic fermentation in new French oak and remained in barrel for 24 months. It is purple-colored with aromas of pain grille, spice box, black berry, and black cherry. This leads to a structured wine but one that is lacking some depth. Give it 3-5 years in the cellar and drink it through 2020." (February 2008) -90 Points - Jay Miller - The Wine Advocate

"Made from 100% Tempranillo, the 2002 Remelluri Coleccion Jaime Rodriguez (from the estate’s highest altitude vineyards) enjoyed malolactic in new French oak where it rested for 24 months prior to bottling. A limited cuvee of 300 cases, it is a stunning, opaque ruby/purple-tinged effort displaying copious amounts of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit intermixed with licorice, smoke, and vanillin. Drink this long, heady, intense Spanish red over the next 4-5 years." (August 2006) -91 Points - Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate

WINE:
"Intense dark cherry red colour, great depth and a maroon edge. Smooth legs and viscous movement in the glass. Aromas of sweet fruit, compote, crystallized fruit, fig jam, candied oranges and black chocolate, followed by hints of purple flowers, violets and dried flowers. Bottom note of mocha and toasty coffee which fits perfectly with the floral aromas. This bottom note is accompanied by flint notes and hints of incense and musk. In short, it has a very aromatic, viscous and fat nose, which is complex and offers a mix of sweetness and aromas that evoke oriental spices."
"It is a wine with a warm, full, meaty and juicy entry. The finish again evokes the mocha and the hints of incense. The palate is long and persistent with a strong, fat tannin structure which brings everything together. In short, it is a harmonious, intense wine with a very promising future." -Winemaker

"The Sierra de Toloño mountains are in the most northerly part of the Rioja Alavesa area, with its transitional climate between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. At the foot of the mountains lie the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja and Villaescusa. They feature staggered terraces which descend towards the River Ebro."
"This area, well protected from prevailing winds and frost, is where the lands of the Nuestra Señora de Remelluri estate are located. There are 154 hectares of chalky clay soil, 105 of which make up the vineyard, with an exceptional microclimate and ideal south-facing slopes."
"This unusual land is what gives its wine personality. It is poor, stony ground, with layers of clay which retain freshness and moisture. All of this allows the fruit to ripen with subtlety and balance. The Atlantic-influenced climate provides abundant rainfall and lower average temperatures than in the rest of the region. The alternation of cool nights and hot days offers ideal conditions for good phenolic ripening of the Tempranillo grape."-Winery
