Description:

2005 VALDESIL PEZAS DE PORTELA:
(Please note, the score Gary V mentioned on the video to the right of the Valdesil on the Valdesil product page is incorrect. The only major publication to rate this was 84 Point Wine Spectator score)
"This is a most individual and complex Godello. Its character reflects the minerality of the slate soils at Portela and is enhanced by the discreet use of French oak which carries through to a secondary level and provides the structure for ageing. It is made from grapes grown on the family estate, picked parcel by parcel (peza) to maintain complexity, and transported to the winery by refrigerated truck. Notably fresh yet full-bodied, with good weight of fruit and balancing acidity." -Winery

WINE REGION:
"The D.O. is Valdeorras and the wine made out of 100% Godello planted to the original Pedrouzos Clone. Valdeorras is a valley hidden in the highest mountains in the inland of Galicia. This area of the province of Ourense managed to preserve 200 ha of the Godello variety. The Godello grape finds in Valdeorras the ideal conditions to offer white wines with full mouth and a special aging capability."

"This valley, crossed by the Sil river, and surrounded by the highest mountains of Galicia offers the ideal conditions for the Godello to develop its full potential. The soils are composed of granite and slate giving these wines an incredible mineral component. Godello is an indigenous grape variety, originated by different crossings and graftings on wild vines by the first Roman settlers that came to the area along the Via Nova (road XVIII Antonino) that connected Astorga and Braga." -Winery

VINIFICATION:
"Pezas da Portela is exclusively made from own grapes. Grapes are carried in small plastic ca- ses to the winery. After a cold pressed, the must precipitates in stainless and a few hours later starts the traditional 'debourbage', to separate the must that will fermentate in French casks. The crianza was made in barrels of French oak. The wine remained in the barrels in contact with the lees for five months until the clarification takes place and the wine is bottled. Its concentration and richness will help the wine with its evolutions in the bottle, being the best time to drink it within the next three years." -Winery

This wine scored 84 points in the Wine Spectator.

2008 FINCA ARANTEI ALBARINO:
"Finca de Arantei's 2008 Albarino is sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1990. Light gold-colored, it offers up an enticing nose of mineral, lemon-lime, floral notes, and a hint of tropical aromas. On the palate it is round, ripe, and spicy with good depth and lively acidity. Drink it over the next 2-3 years." -90 points- Jay Miller- Wine Advocate

WINE:
"Pale straw in color with distinct floral and mineral aromas, characteristic of the Albarino grape. On the palate, the flavors are very rich, showing green apple and citrus as well as some tropical fruits. Lively on the tongue, complex in flavor and long on the finish with a good balance between acidity and fruit. Goes well with grilled fish, any kind of seafood, rice dishes, salads and vegetables." -Importer

VINIFICATION:
"The grapes are harvested in September. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with 12 days of alcoholic fermentation, with no malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks for 5 months, then bottled and aged in bottle for a month." -Importer

RIAS BAIXAS:
"The DO of Rias Baixas lies on Galicia's deeply indented west coast, off of the Atlantic Ocean, just north of the Portuguese border- a land of harsh weather, great fishing, and the Albarino grape. While the vast majority of the wines from this district are produced from a mix of locations by cooperative wineries, many of which are blends of a variety of grapes, Finca de Arantei is a single estate, 100% Albarino wine. The winery occupies 87.5 acres of rocky and sandy soil in the sub-zone of Condado de Tea, the heart of the Mino Valley, which gets some of the most ample sunshine in the DO." -Importer
