93 Pts Jay Miller - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate |
"The 2005 Alexander Laing Old Vines Grenache was sourced from 100-year-old vines in the Greenock subregion of Barossa. Dark ruby-colored, it has a complex bouquet of damp earth, sage, smoked herbs, espresso, cassis, and kirsch. Velvety-textured with superb depth, it also has well-concealed tannins which will allow the wine to evolve for another 4-6 years. It has a pure, 45-second finish. This outstanding Grenache will drink well through 2020." (Oct. 2007) -93 points- Jay Miller- Wine Advocate |
Description:
"The dark ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Old Vine Grenache Alexander Laing (from 80- to 100-year-old vines) offers damp earth-like notes intermixed with scents of kirsch liqueur, licorice, and pepper. This wine explodes at the back of the palate after a subtle and restrained attack. With a huge finish as well as loads of richness and extract, it should drink well during its first decade of life. (Oct. 2006)" -94 points Robert Parker
"Deep red. Vibrantly perfumed scents of red and dark berries complicated by fresh flowers, minerals and anise. The palate brings weighty, darker fruits, gently supported by supple tannins and brightening minerality. Finishes sweet and impressively long, with excellent grip and a subtle vanillin oak character." -92 points- Josh Raynolds- International Wine Cellar
"Distinctive, with a particular minerality infusing the fresh cherry, pomegranate and orange peel flavors, lingering nicely. Drink now through 2012. 500 cases made." -91 points Wine Spectator
"Like a couple of other Colonial Estate 2005s, this has a lifted nose that flirts with volatile vinyl and acetone scents, then settles down to deliver spice and chocolate. This is really fudge-like and dense, picking up hints of pepper on the finish along with some dusty tannins. Should be long-lived for Australian Grenache; drink nowââ¬â2015." -90 points Wine Enthusiast
WINE:
"This is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre. The vine-pull in the Barossa Valley significantly reduced the number of genuinely old vines. One of the varieties to survive was Grenache, and this Single Vineyard wine is produced from 100 year-old weather-beaten vines from the region of the Moppa, in the North-West corner of the Barossa. Green-harvesting and handpicking, along with meticulous winemaking ensures a rich, definitive Grenache." -Importer
WINEMAKING:
"Blocks are vinified separately in small oak vats, equipped with temperature control. Extraction techniques during and after primary fermentation include rotation pumping and punch-downs; the post-fermentation maceration period may be up to four weeks depending on tasting and the wine is run off into new French oak barrels for the malolactic fermentation." -Importer
