94 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2006 L'Avion, a blend of 90% Roussanne and 10% Viognier, is even better than the 2007. A full-bodied, dry white offering copious quantities of honeysuckle, and a hint of that petroleum/terroir-like character that one finds in a late harvest wine from Alsace. However, this is a dry, beautifully rich, layered, perfumed white that represents an excellent example of what can be achieved in California's Central Coast with top-notch whites. It should drink well for 2-3 years. (June 2008)" -94 points Robert Parker

"Yellow-gold. Exotic, strongly perfumed bouquet evokes apricot, honey, spun sugar and dried flowers. Sappy and deeply concentrated, with powerful pit fruit flavors and a late note of lime zest. Wild stuff, with impressive back-end lift and finishing minerality. This doesn't want to let go of your palate. Would be great with washed rind or blue cheeses. (Nov/Dec 2008)" -92 points- Josh Raynolds- International Wine Cellar

WINE:
"Stolpman Vineyards [include] 18 acres of Roussanne, the primary varietal of the 2006 L'Avion, are part of only 165 total planted acres in all of California. This uncommonly produced varietal is notorious for its inconsistent yields, uneven ripening and late harvest, which make it a constant viticulture challenge. The proprietary name L'Avion (the airplane) is a reference to the stretch of land that once was an old Santa Ynez airstrip, which creates an ideal growing site with consistent soil and sun exposure for the vines."

"The 2006 L'Avion underwent primary and malolactic fermentation in primarily new 500-liter French oak puncheons which improves the rich mouthfeel of this wine. The larger barrels also allow for a higher fermentation temperature, better oak integration and a lesser 'wood to wine' ratio than the more common 225-liter barrels. We also age the wine in the 500-liter puncheons to allow a slower aging process and better integration of wood. The wine was racked once off its lees in the summer of 2007 and again to the bottling tank in February 2008. To preserve as much flavor as possible, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration."

"The 2006 L'Avion, a golden-hued wine of unbelievable character and texture, is 90% Roussanne and 10% Viognier. With a finished natural alcohol of 14.9%, the L'Avion shows incredible richness in the mouth with aromas of honeysuckle and sweet fruit in the nose. Drink now through 2011- 914 cases produced." -Winery

VINEYARDS:
"The vineyards at the Stolpman estate enjoy the warm days and cool nights of Ballard Canyon, which lies 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County, on California's Central Coast. The combination of climate, southern exposure, and limestone soils makes for a unique terroir suited to growing Syrah, Sangiovese, and Roussanne. The first vines were planted at Stolpman in 1992 by Coastal Vineyard Care Associates, who continue to farm and develop the 220-acre estate." -Winery
