92 Pts Joe Czerwinski - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Drawn from several 60- to 100-year-old plots of Carignan, the 2018 IGP Côtes Catalanes Carignan Vieilles Vignes spent a year in vat and barrel (a small proportion new), but it remains stunningly vibrant, fresh and unencumbered by oak. Raspberry fruit picks up hints of garrigue, green peppercorns and even floral notes, while the full-bodied palate is silky and smooth and the flavors linger on the finish. Even if you're not a huge Carignan fan, this wine is almost guaranteed to convert you.

Description:

This wine personifies the Roussillon region, and virtually transports you to the Mediterranean coast in France.

Mild garrigue - that arid, dry underbrush found in the area - paired with amazing ripe fruit notes (think red raspberry and macerated strawberry!!) dance across the palate, while the mild oak from this wine provides a perfect framework for the bright acidity and underpinning of minerality to balance out this beauty. But what we still can't get over is the price - how is a wine this complex and full of character under $20!?!

This is a hearty red that you should certainly go deep on; a great match for any cuisine, but particularly a slow roasted chicken with olives and lemon, or a Mediterranean themed meal. Whichever direction you go, there is little doubt that the highlight will be this beautiful Carignan - it's a delight!
