13.4% alc. pH 3.62, TA 0.61, 200 cases; Clone 777 planted in 2000. Harvest Brix 24.1º. 15% whole cluster. Aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. Unfiltered. Dark garnet color in the glass. Brooding aromas of black fruits, molasses and toasty oak. Dense, bold and slightly withdrawn in a mid weight plus style featuring well ripened fruit flavors of blackberry and blueberry-pomegranate. Big but not too big with plenty of vigor and a sleek mouthfeel. Typical of Martini clone. When tasted several hours after opening, the nose had come alive with more fruit appeal and the wine showed more polish, class and concentration. Score: 94. Reviewed February 3, 2019

This site in the Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley was known as Floodgate when Micah Wirth and Adrian Manspeaker began working with the vineyard in 2008. They work with a hillside parcel to make this gentle pinot, its bright scents of roses and fresh red fruit carried on brisk tannins. It delivers Russian River Valley’s plump fruit and beeswax tannins, a classic style to bridge a range of dishes, from fish in a red wine reduction to roast game birds or red meat. (174 cases)

There's a significant barrel oak imprint in this wine, which follows in soft layers of floral rose, wild strawberry and tea. Made in a light-bodied, delicate style, it still has power beneath its bright vibrant acidity. Virginie Boone

Description:

"If Joseph Jewell Wines has a “home” vineyard, it would be the incredibly diverse and beautiful Starscape Vineyard, which is just down the road from the tasting room in Forestville. Located in the Middle Reach neighborhood of the Russian River Valley AVA, Starscape enjoys the close company of legendary vineyards such as Kistler and Ritchie. From Starscape, we source both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which both thrive in this vineyard that rests in a crook where the Russian River turns west towards the Pacific Ocean. This special topography creates a perfect pathway for the coastal fog to funnel into the vineyard, providing cooler evening and early morning temperatures that shape the vibrant acidity of the wines from Starscape. With 13 different clones of pinot noir and five clones of chardonnay, Starscape provides with all the tools needed to craft singular wines of place. While they have worked with the grapes of Starscape since 2008 (when it was known as Floodgate), it was in 2014 when they started crafting the Old Girls Martini Clone Pinot Noir from a block of vines that were among the first pinot noir planted in the Russian River Valley (1971)." -- Winery
