90 Pts Josh Raynolds - Vinous Media

"Very light orange. Displays buoyant red berry and citrus fruit aromas, along with suave mineral and floral overtones. Juicy and light on its feet, offering vibrant strawberry and blood orange flavors that deepen and pick up a peachy flourish with air. Finishes long and supple, with resonating floral character and a touch of fennel."

Description:

"Château Bas sits in the heart of the Côteaux d’Aix-en-Provence appellation and has been in the Blanquet family since 1980. The château, temple and chapel date from between 1050 to the 1400s and are classified as historic monuments. This resplendent estate is surrounded by forests and valleys giving it a unique microclimate and array of terroirs for cultivating vines. The combination of sun-soaked clay-limestone hillsides and shady contouring valleys provide a rich palette of flavors and aromas in the wines. Natural springs and Le Mistral, the famed Northwestern winds moving through the region, create ideal conditions for ripening, flavor development as well as freshness.

The “Pierre du Sud” cuvée is a small production of mostly Counoise (very rare for Provence rosé!) particularly because this varietal represents only 5% of the estate’s plantings. Chateau Bas continues to plant Counoise because of its interesting and unique flavor profile as well as its natural ability to resist common vine disease and severe Mediterranean drought. This pale pink Côteaux d’Aix-en-Provence Rosé combines 90% Counoise with 10% Rolle for added lift and brightness. It is fermented at cool temperatures in tank and without malolactic fermentation to give it added freshness. It boasts flavors of wild strawberry and pomegranate with lovely acidity and balance all way through to its crisp finish." - Importer
