90 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2014 Moonset exhibits plenty of tangy, peppery blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, and medium to full body without the weight or richness of the Zinfandel or the personality of the Sucker Punch. Nevertheless, there is a lot to like, as the wine is intense and satisfying. Drink it over the next 7-8 years."

Description:

Moonset refers to the moment that the moon descends from the horizon, followed shortly thereafter by the sun's ascension. It is the darkest and quietest moment of the night, when the nocturnal creatures prepare their slumber and the diurnal ones begin to stir.

John Kane loves the dark intensity that Petite Sirah brings to the berrylicious Zinfandel sweet and sour notes. He has utilized Zinfandel from Red Rock Ranch in the most eastern reaches of Knights Valley at 2,300 feet in elevation at the foot of Mt. St. Helena. Rare for Zinfandel, but this vineyard is planted bilaterally for sunburn and frost protection. Bright, high tones are present.

The Petite Sirah hails from two sites: Tzabaco Vineyard on the western side of Dry Creek Valley and Viszlay Vineyard on the eastern reaches of Russian River Valley. The warm site of Tzabaco is cropped well under a ton per acre with less than one cluster per shoot. The cooler Viszlay Vineyard brings plenty of spice and black, inky color.

The mixture of hot and cool climates produces a wine of distinction and what could be thought of as a Bordeaux-style Zinfandel with more elegance than generally seen in these regions. Aged in a mix of French and American barrels and racked three times.
