Luigi D'Alessandro pioneered Rhone-style wines in eastern Tuscany and has now become Cortona's reference point producer. The winery was on to something great when they started planting Syrah in the 1980s. This classically Rhone variety loves Cortona's clay soils, sunny days and cool nights.The estate's success with Syrah helped put Cortona on the map.
Migliara is the estate's top-tier wine, sourced solely from a half-hectare vineyard and made only in the best vintages. 2010 was one such vintage for Tuscany. As Galloni notes in his 2013 article In a Tuscan State of Mind, "2010 will go down as one of the great all-time vintages in Tuscany...a vintage for classicists."
Limited quantities: The estate produces less than 200 cases of this wine. They invest a great deal of effort and time in their "grand-cru" level bottling, aging the wine for 3 years in barriques and casks, and then allowing it to settle in bottle another year, before release.
This Syrah is ready to drink now and for another 10 years. Enjoy it with anything you roast this fall.
